Biography

James Handyside was born 27th November, 1849, Walkerville, South Australia - just a few months after his mother, Elizabeth Handyside, arrived in South Australia, from London via the Emily. His birth was registered in Adelaide giving his father's name as James Duncan. [1] [2]

On 28th January, 1850, his mother married Robert White. James appears to have kept his mother's surname, though, and was known by his mother's surname, including variations: Handyside, Anderside and Andersite.

By 1879, James was in the Colony of Victoria, in the Wimmera area.

In 1879, in Victoria, as James Anderside, he married a widow, Eliza Dixon. [3]

They had at least seven children before Eliza passed away in 1894, her death registered at Jeparit, Victoria.

Did James Anderside change his name around 1894 to Robert White his birth father’s name. Thanks

Hi Gwenda, welcome to Wikitree, and for drawing my attention here.

I've added some sourcing and bio, and changed his birth surname - it appears his father was James Duncan. Robert White was his step-father. I found he was born Handyside, married into my lines as Anderside, and died as Andersite. I don't know if he ever used the surname White. Regards Christine
