John Anderson was born in Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, County Durham, England.

John William was born on the 6 October 1827, and baptized on the 4 November 1827 at the Parish Church of St. Michael and All Angels, High Street West, in the Village of Bishopwearmouth, west of the City of Sunderland, Parish of Bishopwearmouth, in Durham, England[1][2]. He is the son of William Anderson and Ann Miller. In 1841, John lived with parents, Bottle Glass Maker, William and Ann (Miller); Ann (Wallace) and siblings Jane (16), Sarah (12), Isabella (8), Dorothy (5) and Margaret (2). Their home was located in the Fenwick Buildings in the Village of Bishopwearmouth, near the City of Sunderland, Parish of Sunderland, in Durham, England[3]. By 1851, the family had moved to 18 West Wear Street, in the City of Sunderland, in Durham, England. William still worked as a Glass Bottle Maker living with wife Ann and children, Blacksmith, John (23); Dressmaker, Sarah (21) and Scholars Isabella (17) and Dorothy (14)[4].

John married Martha Bumstead on the 27 November 1851 at Holy Trinity Church, Church Street East, in the City of Sunderland, District of Sunderland, Durham, England[5]. The couple had the following children:--

  1. Ann "Annie" (Anderson) Fenwick, born 6 July 1854 in Seaham Harbour, Easington, Durham[6];
  2. John William Anderson, born 11 July 1857; died 30 May 1863 in Sunderland, Durham[7][8];
  3. Thomas Anderson, born between January and March 1862, in Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham[9];
  4. Sarah (Anderson), born between April and June 1864, in Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham[10];
  5. John "Victor" Anderson, born between October and December 1866 in Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham[11];
  6. Martha Anderson, born on the 12 March 1869 in Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham[12];
  7. Elizabeth Anderson, born Ca. May 1871; died 7 June 1871 at 2 weeks old at 7 Hill Field Terrace in Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham[13][14]; and
  8. Robert Anderson, born between October and December 1872 in Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham[15].

We find John and Martha (Bumstead), in 1861, living with children Ann (7) and John William (4) at 22 John Street, in Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham, England. He is employed as a Labourer and is 35 years old at the time[16]. By 1871, they have added to their family and John and Martha reside with children Ann (16), Thomas (9), Sarah (7), John (4) and Martha (2) at 7 Hill Field Terrace, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham, England. He is now working as a Teaser in a Bottle Works[17].

John is working as a Glass Metal Mixer in 1881, living with his wife Martha and children, General Labourers in Bottle Works, Thomas (19) and John (14) and Scholars, Martha (13) and Robert (9) at 9 Kirks Bottle Works, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham, England[18]. At the age of around 64, John passes away on the 27 February 1891, and is buried on the 3 March 1891 in the Parish Churchyard, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham, England[19][20].
