Caroline was the second daughter of Anthony Anderson, an English-born immigrant, and Margaret Jeffreys. [1]She was raised in Quebec City, where her father was a businessman. She married Benjamin Rooth, a lieutenant and adjutant in the 76th Regiment of Foot, in 1817. [2] He served as Town Major in Montreal from 1830 to 1834.[3]
In 1838 The London Gazette reported: "Captain Benjamin Rooth has been allowed to retire from the Service, with the sale of his commission as a Captain Unattached, he being about to become a settler in Canada. Dated 14th December 1838."[4] In fact, he had already bought land in 1834 in Bertie Township, Upper Canada, from Baldwin Merrill, who "sold to Benjamin Rooth 112 acres 2 roods in Lot 6 & part of Lot 7 Concession 9 from the Niagara River, Bertie Twp. above for ₤500.00." [5] The Rooths had eight children, and their youngest, Agnes, was born in the Niagara region of what is now Ontario.
Caroline died in 1840 and was buried at Saint Paul's Anglican Cemetery, Fort Erie. [6]
