Biography

Parentage and Birth

Robert Anderson was the oldest and apparently only son of David Anderson of King William County. His relationship with David is proven by a transaction taking place shortly after David died, on Sep. 4, 1735, in which a guardian was appointed for Robert, "orphan of David Anderson," in Hanover County where David owned land. The relationship was later confirmed in a deed transaction in 1745 in which Robert is described as "Robert Anderson (eldest son and heir of David Anderson, late of King William county, deceased), and Frances, his wife, of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover county..." The Virginia Magazine of History and Biograpy, Vol. 12, July 1904, p. 205[1]

Robert's mother was Francis Poindexter Anderson, the daughter of John Poindexter and Christian Gissage. Colonial Virginia Andersons Rootsweb Page under 5. Robert[2] Frances is also identified as "Frances Anderson" in the will of both her father John Poindexter (Poindexter-68) and mother Christian Poindexter (Gissage-5).

Robert's birth year is uncertain but is probably 1724. This analysis comes from the Pat Anderson website contribution of a descendant Bonnie Gunsaulas, who reasons that Robert was under 14 at the time of his 1735 orphan guardian status (thus born no earlier than 1721) because he did not choose his own guardian, and was at least 21 by 1745 when he entered into his first land transaction (thus born no later than 1724). Robert's birthplace is not stated in any record, but most likely was King William County where his father David owned considerable land and lived during his life.

(The original profile states that Robert was a member of the House of Burgesses, Louisa Co 1754-58 and Justice in 1771. I cannot find a source for this and believe the reference may be confused with Robert Anderson of Goldmine (Anderson-9154) who served in the House of Burgesses in this time frame.)

Children

Six of the children of Robert and Francis Anderson are clearly identified in a 1782 conveyance in which oldest son David conveys land to his siblings. Robert died intestate and thus his entire estate went to David. David, in an act of familial loyalty, then deeded over 1/7 of that property to six of his siblings, named as Robert, John, Ann, Susannah, Kitty & Sally.[1] That conveyance also confirms that the father of these siblings was Robert Anderson. Two daughters, Elizabeth and Frances, are not named in Robert's will, probably because they were married at the time of Robert's death.

Death

Robert's death in 1782 is based on the transactions involving his intestate death and transfer of property to David, followed by David's 1/7 conveyance of shares to each of six siblings in 1782.
