James was born in 1853 to Mina (Williamina) Brass and Andrew Anderson, farmer. He was baptised on 5 February 1853 at the Church of Scotland, Stromness, Orkney Islands.
At the age of 16 he travelled to America where he spent 6 six years. During the summer he would work on the boats and in winter, ashore. James also had 2 years experience as a sail maker.
In 1876, James sailed on the Marlborough on her second voyage to New Zealand.
He married Elizabeth Veal Cargeeg in 1881 having eight children born during their marriage, 4 daughters and 4 sons. James interesting life is recorded in the attached obituary.
James Anderson passed away at his property, 'Endsleigh' in his 61st year in 1915 and is buried at Oamaru Old Cemetery. BLK 80, PLOT 39, 40.
