Sarah Anderson is believed to have been born sometime around 1790 in (presumably) Virginia or Tennessee.
She is believed to have married Eli Bowling sometime around 1805 in roughly the same area.
The household of Eli Bowling is believed to be found on the 1810 census of Clay Co., KY[1] - with Sarah being the woman 16-25 in the household (putting her born sometime between 1785 & 1794).
Eli Bowling is believed to have remarried in 1817 in Clay Co., KY[2] - thus, it is believed that Sarah was deceased by this time.
The only record found, thus far, giving us an age of Sarah (Anderson) Bowling is the 1810 census of Clay Co., KY, which puts her birth sometime between 1785 & 1794.
Her daughter, Nancy, lists her mother as born in Tennessee on the 1880 census[3]. Mourning, however, lists her mother as born in Kentucky on the 1880 census[4].
Previously (prior to 23 March 2024), Sarah was attached as a child of Elijah Anderson (1758-1837) & his wife, Miriam Anderson (1777-abt.1803).
Elijah Anderson lived his life in Culpepper Co., VA - far removed from the Clinch River Valley where Eli Bowling, husband of Sarah Anderson, is said to have originated.
Elijah Anderson, also, already has a daughter, Sarah Anderson (1779-1815), attached to him.
Miriam Anderson is listed as being born in 1777 - she was much too young to be mother of Sarah (Anderson) Bowling who was likely born ~1790.
It is highly unlikely that Sarah (Anderson) Bowling, wife of Eli Bowling is a daughter of Elijah Anderson.
Being that Eli Bowling's family has been found in the Clinch River Valley region of Claiborne & Hawkins Co., TN & Lee Co., VA, it is possible that Sarah (Anderson) Bowling is a daughter of an Anderson man in this region old enough to have a daughter born ~1786 - possibly James Anderson (abt.1760-) & his wife Morning (Walling) Anderson (abt.1772-) - who can be found taxed in Lee Co., VA from 1799 & Hawkins Co., TN from 1810 and is believed to have moved into Mulberry Gap in Claiborne Co., TN ~1812.
Sally (Anderson) Bowling is believed to have passed prior to 1817, when an Eli Bowling married the widow Nancy Wilson.
2 of her attached children marry sometime after 1817 - Mourning in 1837 to William Sizemore[5] & Blevins in 1841 to Nancy Lewis[6]. Both marriages contain parental consent notes signed by their mother, Sally Bowling.
Provided that Sally (Anderson) Bowling, wife of Eli Bowling did, indeed, pass pre-1817, these 2 would appear to not be her children, as she most certainly wasn't signing consent some 20 years post-decease. It is likely, however, that Sarah did not pass pre-1817 and was, instead, Eli's widow at his decease.
The 1840 census of Clay Co., KY does show a Sarah Bolin (aged 40-50) with 2 males 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 2 females under 5, and 1 female 5-10[7]. It is currently unknown who her late husband was.
It is possible that this is the mother Sally Bowling who signed consent for Mourning Bowling to marry in 1837 & Blevins Bowling to marry in 1841 (with the son 15-20 in her household in 1840 being Blevins).
If this is Sarah (Anderson) Bowling, it calls into question whether her husband, Eli Bowling, did indeed marry the widow Nancy Wilson in 1817 - considering that she is alive and begins to sign consent for her children to marry as early as 1837 (right after Eli's death in 1833).
If this is Not Sarah (Anderson) Bowling, then it may call into question the attachment of Mourning & Blevins as children of Eli & Sarah (Anderson) Bowling.
The tax lists of Clay Co., KY also record a Sarah Bowling first starting to be taxed in 1836[8] (3 years after the death of Eli Bowling[9]). She is taxed up through at least 1845 in Clay Co., KY - therefore being the Sarah Bolin found on the 1840 census of Clay Co., KY as a head-of-household. And, stands a good chance of being the Sally Bowling who signs consent for Mourning & Blevins to marry in 1837 & 1841.
Specifically, the 1838 tax list of Clay Co., KY records Saraha Bolin[10] being listed next to Lida, Blevans, & James - all listed as children of Eli Bowling.
It is possible that, if this is Sarah (Anderson) Bowling, widow of Eli Bowling, that she did not pass in 1816 (and possible that, again, Eli did not marry the widow Nancy Wilson in 1817).
