Biography

1776 Project
Soldier John Anderson Sr. served with Roebuck's Regiment, South Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
John Anderson Sr. is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A002449.

[NOTE: This John Anderson is not the son of James Anderson and Sudt Garland. See "Parentage" section below.]

John Anderson was born circa 1730, probably in Stafford county Virginia, to David Anderson and Elizabeth Burras. In 1752 he married Sarah Carney in Stafford Virginia.[1] John and Sarah had their first few children in Stafford, before moving to 96-District, South Carolina in the 1760s[2] where the rest of their children were born.

John participated in the Cherokee War and the Revolutionary War in the mid-late 1770s (see Military Service section below) and died from injuries sustained in the 1st siege of Augusta. Though he was injured in Georgia in the Spring of 1781, he was apparently moved to a military hospital in Camden North Carolina, where he died October 8, 1781[3] The record for his death was found in the North Carolina Archives.

Parentage

For quite some time John has been thought to be the John Anderson who is listed in Rev James Anderson's bible with a birthdate of January 13, 1724. This theory has been called into question in a well sourced page on Rootsweb.[4] It is there pointed out that the DAR ancestor who represents this John Anderson (DAR ancestor A002449) is a different individual to the DAR ancestor A002457 (John Anderon?). This second John Anderson married Ann Irwin and is thought to be the son of Rev James Anderson (DAR Ancestor A002457). It is this second John Anderson who has the birthdate of January 13, 1724 in the DAR database. The John Anderson who is this profile is listed with an estimated DOB of 1730 and a location of Scotland (which was based off of oral tradition in the family). Ironically, it is likely the case that the DAR database is in error in attributing the January 13, 1724 birthdate to John Anderson spouse to Ann Irwin. Deeds in Madison Kentucky (Book D, pgs 712-714 and Book H pgs 167-168) indicate he is son to a different James Anderson. It is possible the John Anderson with the January 13, 1724 DOB died young.

The linkage to David Anderson and Elizabeth Burras for parents to this profile is also asserted in the aforementioned Rootsweb page. The evidence on the whole is convincing. There are no records of proof but there is strong circumstantial evidence that indicates this.

  • The Carney family John's spouse Sarah descends from is found in the record contemporary to David Anderson in Stafford Virginia. There is a Joshua Carney among them, though his relation to Sarah isn't known a close relation is assumed.
  • David Anderson had close association with families with the surname "Vincent"[5] and John's great uncle George Anderson is thought by some to have married Sarah Scarlett, daughter to Martin Scarlett, who was a Sheriff in Stafford county (and George's Superior, as he as he served as "Undersheriff" under him). However, it should be noted that there is not a daughter Sarah mentioned in Martin Scarlett's will,[6] and the only documented connection to Martin Scarlett is as Under-Sheriff.
  • From the before mentioned Rootsweb page: "7 Apr 1675. List of bills left with Alexander Doniphan: …Mr. Waught…Martin Scarlet…List of accounts left with Mr. Doniphan: …David Anderson…Henry Bayly…Mr. Giles Brent. Recorded 21 Nov 1677. Westmoreland County, Virginia Deeds, Patents, Etc., 1665-1677, pages 344-345a."[7] and later: "Concerning the April 1675 record--clearly ties the Andersons of Stafford/Fairfax Counties to a branch of Andersons who went to Camden Co., SC. That John Anderson's two oldest sons were named Bailey and Scarlett Anderson. There other records showing association with a man whose last name was Brent. This Anderson family had ties to Carneys (Kearneys) and Cliftons."

* The names of John's children Bailey, Scarlett, Joshua, and Vincent are presumed to be related to these connections.

The connection is likely but should be considered uncertain as the following theories are also possible:

1) Two of John's descendants indicate he was born in Scotland. It is possible he was a more recent immigrant than the Anderson family that was already present in Stafford in the early-mid 1700s. However, the ties between the Carneys and the Andersons likely started before his earliest possible date of immigration. It would be quite the coincidence for an unrelated individual named Anderson to marry into the Carney family and name their children after families that were closely associated with the unrelated Andersons who were already present before immigration.

2) George Anderson could be the grandfather to this profile, rather than his great-uncle. There are no documented children for George, but if he did have children, it is possible for one of them to be the father of this profile.

3) There is a theory that John is son to a George Anderson who died in Orange County VA in 1744 on a website called "Early Colonial Settlers of Southern Maryland and Virginia's Northern Neck Counties."[8] The understanding of the family of John Anderson and Sarah Carney is radically different in this version (and likely in error). This version has Sarah Carney with a first spouse Thomas Carney who died circa 1741 in Prince William County, and maiden name un-known. It has Sarah's POD as Prince William County after 1741. This is unlikely as Sarah was likely too young in 1741 to be a mother (which is also asserted in this version). Her son William lists her DOB as 1739 in his Bible.[9] Though this DOB is also likely in error, as her son Baily was born in 1754, an error of almost 20 years seems unlikely. It is certainly the case that Sarah lived until 1811 and died in Livingston or Caldwell County Kentucky. She is found as late as 1810 paying taxes there.[10]

Because of the ambiguity of John's heritage, it is likely that DNA analysis will play a major role in proving his lineage. The main question to be resolved: Was John related to the Andersons who were present in the location he lived, or a more recent immigrant who happened to share a surname with other locals.? Circumstantial evidence points to the first of these options.

Find-A-Grave Memorial Reproduction

[John] married Sara Carney on November 28, 1752. John and three of his sons were in the Revolutionary War. John died because of his wounds at the Battle of Augusta Ga. having served in Col Roebuck's Regiment. John Anderson was a minute man in the militia. September 18, 1780 Battle of Augusta.

...according to g/f John Anderson's file A.A.115 X3341 he served only in Col. Benjamin Roebuck's Regiment before and after the fall of Charleston, the same is true for Uncle Scarlett Anderson file A.A.124 X3343, and Uncle Joshua Anderson file A.A.117 X3342.

...attached to [John Andersons pension file] is g/m Sarah [Carney] Anderson's first petition (20 May 1786) requesting payment of the Indent as the widow of John Anderson and the mother of Scarlett and Joshua Anderson. The Indent it is attached to is dated 7 Jun 1786. Audited Account 114: I find it most curious that Indents for g/f John, uncle Scarlett, and uncle Joshua actually show that when written they were ALL "AUDITED ACCOUNT #114" - not A.A.115, 117, 124 !!!!

I think what happened was our earlier cousins identified the Capt John Anderson, John Anderson Jr, and John Anderson Sr as grandpa and his son so the files were put together as one family, i.e., g/f John, uncle John Jr, uncle Scarlett, uncle Joshua. When in fact, Capt John, John Sr, John Jr were completely different persons.[11]

  • Mother's genealogy work

There have been multiple entries as to whom John Anderson is. It's regarding DOB, potential locations of birth, when he married. Death is same and with Military records out there, widows claiming benefits from Revolutionary War seems to line up with my mother's records as to what I found when I lived in Fredericksburg VA area for Sarah Carney. I have been to Aquia Church in Stafford VA, got information from the Central Library in Fredericksburg. I am not merging any names due to the discrepancies.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I think it would be a good idea to re-attach this profile to Sarah Carney as spouse. This is the best accounting I can find for this individual's children:

"Children of John Anderson and Sarah Carney are:

+ 7 i. Bailey7 Anderson, born November 13, 1753 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co., Virginia; died August 01, 1840 in Harrison Co., Texas.

8 ii. Scarlett Anderson, born June 20, 1756 in Stafford Co., Virginia; died 1783 in Rev. War KIA Camden, South Carolina.

9 iii. Sela Anderson, born March 01, 1758 in Stafford Co., Virginia.

10 iv. Joshua Anderson, born 1759 in Newberry (96) Dist., SC (or in Virginia); died 1783 in Rev. War KIA.

+ 11 v. William Anderson, born 1761 in Camden, North Carolina.

+ 12 vi. Charles Anderson, born 1762; died August 15, 1818.

13 vii. John Anderson, born 1763.

14 viii. Charlotte Anderson, born Abt. 1763. She married John Chapman

15 ix. Alexander Anderson, born 1764. He married Nancy Wilcox.

+ 16 x. Dorcas Anderson, born November 13, 1766 in Spartanburg, South Carolina; died Abt. 1849.

19 xiii. Samuel Anderson, born 1772 (Source: Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #0371, Date of Import: Jan 24, 1996).

20 xiv. Deliah Anderson."

As it stands this profile has most of these children, some in duplicate, and Joseph, who should probably be detached. His birthplace seems to be North Carolina rather than Virginia or 96-distict South Carolina which is where John, Sarah, and all the other children for this profile lived/were born in.

I've been trying to figure out where Joseph belongs but haven't made progress yet. There are trees on Ancestry that put him in this family, but none with any sources to justify the link.

I think we will need to create another profile for John Anderson who married Sarah Carney unless there is an existing profile.

The only problem is this bio is for the John Anderson who married Sarah Carney. He is the one who died in Camden SC in 1781 from wounds suffered in the Revolution

Since there is already a profile for the John Anderson who married Ann Irvine, if that is Joseph’s father he should be moved over to that profile. All these other children are for John and Sarah

Thanks. That John Anderson is already on Wikitree https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Anderson-2148

For some reason the profile manager removed him from Rev James Anderson and Sudt Garland to his current parents.

This John Anderson (the one for this profile with these children and spouse Sarah Carney) has a different DAR file, I’ll try to find it and send it after work. His date of birth is estimated at 1730 and he is quite clearly the individual who died in 1781 in SC and not the individual who died in 1796 in Kentucky

Just to be clear, the following is clear in the record from primary sources:
  • the biography for this profile is for the John Anderson who married Sarah Carney. (Pension application filed in Livingston KY with children Vincent and John)
  • the children for this profile are mostly of John and Sarah, with baptism records for Baily and Scarlet in Stafford VA to parents John and Sarah
  • Sarah was the spouse for the John Anderson who died from wounds suffered in the Revolution in Camden 1781 (pension files that mention wife Sarah, marriage record for John Anderson and Sarah Carney)

Looks like there has been some movement on this profile. Should I remove Sarah's children from this profile as well? There also has been movement on the profile for the John Anderson who married Ann Erwin or Irvin. John Anderson. He has been moved from James and Sudt to a son of John and Jane (who coincidentally are the John and Jane who I sent links to in previous comments as possibly being the grandparents of Baily, who we have confirmation of being a son of Sarah Carney). There is still one more John Anderson profile in the mix, who is currently the only remaining John linked to James and Sudt.

I do not think this John Anderson is the John Anderson who married Sarah Carney, so at this point I think a new profile needs to be made for the spouse of Sarah Carney? Would appreciate any insight anyone has. BTW, it would be easier to remove the incorrect children from this profile rather than the spouse.

I think George Anderson deserves some attention: Location of Stafford is right, also married Sarah Scarlett. That seems either very coincidental (if there is such a thing) or the right family.

Edit: https://homepages.rootsweb.com/~anderson/va/trees/david.html At first glance, this tree has our John 3rd son to the above George Anderson's brother David. Immediately after is the exact essay regarding John as not son to James and Sudt that appears below in the comment section. Has contact info and claims documentation.

Also John Carney appears on various records, I think in conjunction with these Andersons, but I'm trying to figure that out.

I also think that the Joseph Anderson(my family) that is mentioned as the son if John Aldridge Anderson may have a different father as well. I think we can rule out Sarah Carney as the wife if John Aldridge Anderson at this point.
posted by Marianne Ritter
I'm not quite sure where the middle name Aldridge comes from. If I am understanding right, Joseph was son to John Aldridge, who is a different individual than John married to Sarah Carney. It does look like Joseph's birth in North Carolina doesn't fit with the other sibling's birth location.

This will take some time to sort out I think, since there are so many errors to find and fix here. I think it is best to let this sit for a couple of weeks to see if others have sources to support or refute the current situation, and then begin work on getting this family sorted out. Thanks for your willingness to collaborate on this.

My Joseph Anderson is currently listed as the son of the above person called Joseph Aldridge Anderson, but I think that this John Aldridge Anderson is not the correct father. Joseph Aldridge Anderson is not too likely to be the husband of Sarah Carney either. I posted Joseph as the son of John Aldridge Anderson because he is listed on Ancestry as being his son. However, no proof exists of this, and I am looking diligently for answers.

I am also not going to ask to change the profile page we are conversing on because we can collaborate better here.

It looks like this profile currently has 17 children associated with it. They are certainly a reflection of more than one family. There looks to be pretty clear documentation on about 12 children for the John Anderson who married Sarah Carney. The rest I have not seen sourcing for. I think changes will have to be made to this family, and also the families of their ancestors as currently appears on wikitree. Because of the large number of possible errors and duplicates it think it is prudent to let others chime in if they are paying attention. But the sourcing is pretty clear on many errors for Rev James Anderson's descendancy as it currently appears just about everywhere on the internet. I'm happy to collaborate on this on this page, would love to figure out where everyone belongs.

Here is a piece of interesting info

John Anderson

John3 Anderson (Northern Neck2, Colonial Virginia1) was born Abt. 1730 in look at Norfolk Va?, and died October 08, 1781 in Kershaw Co., Camden, South Carolina. He married Sarah Carney November 28, 1752 in Stafford County, Virginia (Source: OverWharton Parish Register.), daughter of John Carney and Mary ?. She was born Abt. 1732, and died 1807 in Livingston County, Kentucky. Notes for John Anderson: REV. JAMES ANDERSON NOT THE FATHER OF JOHN ANDERSON WHO MARRIED SARAH CARNEY Probably twenty years ago, the assertion was made that the Rev. James Anderson was the father of our John Anderson. As soon as it came to my attention, I started trying to track down the reason why this statement was made. I didn't really doubt it, I just wondered how the connection was made. What I learned was that it all seemed to hinge on the fact that someone had given January 13, 1724 as our John's birthdate. Of course, that was when the Rev. James' son, John, was born. My next step was to find out why this birthdate was assigned to our John. I finally tracked it back to an elderly lady in Kentucky who, when I wrote to her, didn't have a clue where she had gotten the date or why she thought it was our John's. Then, I assembled all the references I could find which had been offered as proof and tracked them back as far as I could and came up with the following sources:  Bible Record of Rev. James Anderson - states only that he had a son, John, born January 13, 1724-5 in New York  Pennsylvania Genealogies by Wm. Egle - only quotes the above Bible record  Immigrants to America Before 1750 by Virkus - quotes the above Bible records and adds that John "died young" "By various records-especially the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography and the Chalkley Records, his path is made clear, For the more minute and intimate details, as to his family, we have the long line of descendants given from the personal knowledge of his granddaughter Martha (Anderson) Baugh, near the middle of the last century...." (here follows a brief history of the Old Stone Church of Augusta Co., Va.) "Reverting to John Anderson: He married, about 1750, Anna Irvine (Erwin). The following list of their descendants is from Court Records and from data given more than fifty years ago, by their granddaughter Martha (Anderson) Baugh, a daughter of their son, William.".... (There is no question but that this is a completely different line from ours.) What it all come down to is that (unless there is some documentation that I don't know about) is there is NO proof that our John Anderson who married Sarah Carney is the son of the Rev. James Anderson and very substantial proof that the Rev. James' son, John, married Ann Irvine (Erwin). If you have anything that would contradict this, I would be very interested in hearing about it. I’ve posted links to a bunch of land records relating to Anderson families in Greenville and Pendleton SC on my profile. Trying to make sense of them, to determine how many Anderson families were there contemporary to Baily. I think I’ve definitely found Baily in 1790 census in Pendleton. It turns out there are actually 2 Sarah Andersons in 1790 Greenville census, not sure which is Baily’s mother.

It looks like many of the Andersons resident in the records are from the family alluded to above as possible origin for John Anderson. But there is at least one other Anderson family that I think is unrelated.

I think there are 2 Robert Andersons as well which complicates things.

The suspected family does have a large number of individuals who were officers in the Revolution which would circumstantially fit for John/Baily’s origins.

I am also starting to work with the Anderson DNA Project. I think you are correct to think that the John Anderson who married Sarah Carney is the same one who died in the Revolutionary War. If I recall, she may have moved to Kentucky. Keep me posted.

Anderson-40365 and Anderson-9361 appear to represent the same person because: These both have same vitals and same Find-A-Grave memorial. It looks complicated as they are a generation off, with different parents. It looks like there are problems with the attachment to parents on both profiles. It would be a good idea to detach both profiles from their current parents and then merge (and then research who the correct parents are before reattaching)

It appears from this site that wiki volunteers have finally decided that in fact THIS John Anderson is actually from Scotland - as his great grandson said he was. That is promising, and appreciated. But then the parents listed for this same John A. Anderson don't match - don't make sense, as they are here in VA. I would love to see this resolved. It looks like no work since 2018; would love to see resolution. Thank you.
