Biography

William Garland was born about 1804 in Cumberland County, Virginia. His parents were Garland Anderson and Sarah Robinson [1] William G was commonly called "Long Billy" in order to distinguish him from his double first cousin, William J Anderson, who was known in Jackson County as "Short Billy".

He was married about 1823 in Jackson County to Sarah H Loveall. [2] They were the parents of twelve children. These children were Elvira, Dorenda, James, John, Jonas, Martha, Meradeth, Sarah, Mary, George, Noah, and William. [3]

The family is recorded in the 1850 census of District 9 Jackson County Tennessee with all twelve children still living at home. [4] By the time the 1860 census was taken in Jackson County the district boundaries had been redrawn. The family is now recorded in District 10. Son Jonas and his wife died of typhoid in November of 1859. Billy was appointed guardian of his grandchildren Drucanna and Horace. Billy and Sarah's household now includes their seven unmarried children and these two grandchildren. [5] When the 1870 census was taken, Billy and Sarah were recorded in District 10 along with daughter Elvira and the two grandchildren, Drucanna and Horace, in the home. [6]

William G Anderson wrote his will on 27 September 1873 in Jackson County, Tennessee, leaving all of his landed estate to his beloved wife Sarah H Anderson during her lifetime. He also stated there should be no division of the estate until after the death of his wife. A colt was bequeathed to his grandson William Horace Anderson. [7] The inventory and sale of his estate was taken 13 November 1873 and recorded at court of December 1873. [8] On 29 November 1873 a year's worth of provisions were allowed for the widow Sarah Anderson. This was recorded at December term of court 1873. [9] On 19 December 1873 the sale of some additional items from the personal estate was made. It was recorded at the January 1874 term of court. [10]

On 1 December 1874 in Jackson County court, an account of the settlement of the estate of W G Anderson was made by the executor Allen Detherage. [11] On 1 December 1875 an accounting of the estate of W G Anderson was made by W J Farmer, now administrator. [12] On 1 December 1876 what appears to be the final accounting and settlement of the estate of W G Anderson was submitted to court by the administrator W J Farmer. [13] William's burial place is unknown.
