Tom was born at Sibley Hospital in Washington, D.C. on 6 Dec 1924.[1][2] His parents had married when they were in their teens. His father went to work painting signs as had his father before him. They lived with the maternal grandfather for a few years, bought a house but sold it the next year, then moved in with his mother's aunt. His parents were drinking and fighting quite a bit and his father moved out during the 1930s but there was no divorce as his Irish Catholic mother did not recognize that as an option. The depression was quite challenging. He and his brother would sleep on the back porch even in the winter. The railroad track ran near the house and he and his brother would collect coal that had fallen from the trains.

Parents

Raymond Anderson

H

is father Raymond was born in Washington, D.C. and there are roots in D.C. that go back at least to 1813 but there are roots in Virginia that go as far back as 1609 in Jamestown. Beyond that, we can look at Yorkshire, England, Suffolk, England, and Ayrshire, Scotland.

H

is mother Margaret Delaney was also born in Washington, D.C. but her parents were recent Irish immigrants from Ballynorig - County Kerry. Her father Patrick was the first to come over in 1892 and her mother Johanna Savage came in 1895 (her sister Debbie came the prior year and her sister Ellen came over in 1911). Patrick and Johanna married in D.C. in 1898 and had two daughters and a son (Johanna died in 1915 and their son died two years later in a sledding accident - Debbie moved in to help Patrick raise the two girls).[3]

A

lthough his grandfather Ernest was doing well financially, his father Raymond appears to have been independent from an early age - marrying Margaret Delaney at 17 and they having their first child - Mary Ellen - soon after. The newlywed couple moved in with the Delaney family - Patrick Delaney, Aunt Debbie, and Margaret's sister Josephine. Two boys soon followed - John and Thomas, born 6 Dec 1924[4].

Margaret Delaney

W

ith the passing of Patrick in 1926/7, Raymond and Margaret bought a house as did Debbie. Raymond and Margaret had to sell the house the following year and moved to Aunt Debbie's house in Brookland.[5][1] The couple quarreled frequently and Raymond, who was present in 1930[6] was gone by 1940.[2]

Marriage

Wedding of Thomas and Erna Anderson

T

om met his wife Erna at a neighborhood party. She was training to be a classical pianist, but against her parents' wishes and after the death of his mother, they married. A January wedding was chosen since Tom was ten months younger and his wife wanted to pick a time when both of them were the same age in years - 19 in this case.[7] It was wartime, he had been serving in the Marines at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. but was due to be shipped out to the Pacific. They moved in with Aunt Debbie and started work on a family . . . eight months and three weeks later, Jimmy was born.

Military

First Army Enlistment

T

he Brookland neighborhood home was about one mile walk from the Old Soldier's Home and Tom and Johnnie would frequently go there. It must have made an impression on the two, especially Tom who joined the Army at nearby Fort Meade, Maryland when he was 15. Some say this was with his mother's approval and others say otherwise, but he was not there long and when Roosevelt forced the Americans into the war through intrigue, he found himself in the Marines.

T

he first years in the Marine Corp were spent at the Navy Yard but he was transferred in 1944 to the 4th Marine Division HQ - Hawaii.

Fourth Marine Division

It is hard to determine details about his participation but the division history is documented, His assignment also included a promotion to Staff Sergeant. He stayed with the Marines for the duration and, after a short stint as a civilian working for a life insurance company, he re-enlisted. It is not clear whether the post-war economy was the cause or just a love of the military, but it is clear that he was not satisfied with remaining a non-com and set his sights on becoming an officer.

N

o opportunities were available to become a Marine officer, however, and he eventually transferred to the Army in order to attend Officers Training. After training at Fort Benning, Ga. and a competitive tour at Fort Riley, KS, he was commissioned in Aug 1949 as 1st Lt. and left for Korea in Mar 1950. At that time, Korea was not the safest of places.

First Purple Heart

O

ne can see that in a four month span he earned three Purple Hearts. The first of these was in a nameless action that was not life threatening and he was quickly patched-up and put back into action.

Second Purple Heart

T

he next month, he was involved in Bloody Ridge and was injured so badly that he was not expected to live. Once again, he was patched up and sent back to the front.

Third Purple Heart

F

ighting was intense as the war entered the beginning of the battle of Heatbreak Ridge and in the first few days he saw his men in L Company, 9th Infantry Reg, Second Infantry Division being cut down like a scythe through wheat. He too was injured and although a mortar shell had open up his side and fragments had lodged in his spine, he manages to make his way to the MASH unit carrying one of his men to safety.

A

fter the tour in Korea, he was sent back to Washington and worked for a time at Fort Indiantown Gap training center for replacement troops. On 27 Jun 1953, the US Military Training Mission (USMTM) was established as a result of a meeting between King Abdul Aziz and FDR years earlier and Captain Anderson was sent to Riyadh for a year. In July of 1954, construction had begun on NSA facilities at Ft. Meade. NSA, formerly known as the Armed Forces Security Agency (AFSA) and the next assignment was to Ft. Meade where, except for a two-year tour in Germany, he remained until retirement.

T

he US had been in Vietnam since 1950 and from 1955 to 1960 had about 1500 advisors there. In 1961, that number doubled and in February 1962 the role changed to active support. Retirement seemed appropriate at this point and with the Army service in the 30s plus the time with the Marines, there was enough time to qualify for a 20-year retirement and he was released from active duty on 30 Jun 1962[8].
