"Alida Bernardina was the oldest and the shortest of the sisters. Her niece, Gusta Myers, remembers her beautiful red hair. She was a good seamstress, a talent she passed on to her daughter, Myrtle Hensel. She took in sewing jobs at home during her married years. She also made many quilts. Alida was described as a spunky lady with a sense of humor. Her son, George Johnston, remembers that she used to explain her temper by saying, "I don't have this red hair for nothing."
Alida married Archie Johnston in 1897 when she was almost twenty-two, and had been in the U.S.for five years. They lived within a few blocks of her father`s house for most of their married life. Archie worked as a teamster, bartender, and finally as a supervisor of a work crew at the city water works. Alida attended the Swedish Lutheran Church, often baked for the Ladies' Aid bake sales, and got her sister Annie interested in going to that church."
Personal recollection, as told to [Johnston-9714] Mary Green, by various family members. Notes in the possession of Lex Green [Green-19458].
