Biography

Not to be confused with William J. Anderson (1844-1913) of Posey County, Indiana.

William James[1] Anderson Sr. was born 9 Oct 1844 and died 12 Apr 1890.[2] He was the wife of Virginia Graves.[1][3] It is likely that he died in Daviess County, Kentucky, as records for his wife Virginia place her there before and after his death.

His birthplace is not known from records created during his life. Census records for his children disagree as to whether he was born in Kentucky,[4][5] Indiana,[6][7] or Ohio.[8][9]

He married Virginia Graves on 1 March 1881:

On Tuesday, March 1st, Mr. W. J. Anderson, of Trinity Springs, Ind., and Miss Jennie Graves, of this county, were married at the residence of the bride's father near Yelvington, Rev. II. C. Settle officiating. The groom is an excellent citizen of the "Hoosier" State, while his fair bride is one of the most popular belles in Yelvington society. The blissful couple passed through the city Wednesday en route to their Indiana home.[10]

Compiled newspaper records from Daviess County indicate the state of his birth and the date of his marriage to Virginia:[11]

OM - p.4; died near Yelvington; see also SE - 1881: 3/4 p.3 (W. J. Anderson of Trinity Springs, IN married Miss Jennie Graves at her father's near Yelvington on 1 March 1881), ME - 1881: 3/9 p.3, OW - 1890: 4/17 p.3

The 15 April 1890 issue of the Owensboro Messenger and the 17 April 1890 issue of the Owensboro Weekly Messenger have the same statement:

W. J. Anderson, aged 36 years, died near Yelvington Sunday, of disease of the brain.[12][13]

Ancestry

William may have been the son of John Anderson and Ellen Martin, both of whom immigrated from Ireland around 1846. Ellen lived in Mitcheltree Township, Martin County, from 1870 to 1880. She had a son named William born around 1844-1845, who was living with her in 1880, and Trinity Springs (described in William's marriage announcement) is located in Mitcheltree Township.

In the 1880 census, the only other William Andersons born from 1841-1847 and living in Martin County, or its surrounding counties (Greene, Lawrence, Orange, Dubois, and Daviess), or any counties immediately to the south of those (Crawford, Harrison, Knox, Perry, Pike, Spencer, Warrick, and Washington), were:

  • a William A. Anderson in Harrison County who was still living there in 1900 and
  • a William Anderson in Washington County whose wife, Elizabeth Overman, was still living there in 1900.

William may also have been the William J. Anderson who was the son of James Anderson and Mary Mitchell of Lawrence County, Indiana, Lawrence County is west of Trinity Springs, across a county line. This William was born around 1845-1846 and had an older brother, James, born around 1844. However, there are no known records of any members of this family being in Lawrence or Martin counties beyond 1865.[14]
