Biography

The existence of this Robert Anderson is based on a single record in 1657 of a Robert Andrewson serving on a York County, VA jury. As explained in Pat Anderson's Rootsweb Andersons of Virginia site, it is at least a possibility, and perhaps likely, that this Robert is the father of Robert Anderson I of New Kent County (Anderson-1605) based on his presence in York County at the right time and being of the right age to be Robert I's father. The original Anderson family researchers, however, attributed Robert I instead to a pair of Richard Andersons, who immigrated in 1635 to Virginia, one 17 and the other about 50. There is no historical record connecting Robert Anderson I to either of these Richards, and the sources do not cite any. W.P. Anderson, E.L. Anderson. It appears E.L. Anderson was aware of the immigration record of the two Richards to Virginia and made the assumption that, as there were essentially no other Andersons in Virginia at the time, one of these two (the younger) must be the father of Robert I. Pat Anderson has analyzed how difficult this connection is, however, because it requires Robert I to be born in 1636 (too early) and only in that year. See Everett.

It seems more likely that the Robert Andrewson of the 1657 jury service would be the father of Robert I. Robert I named his first born Robert Jr., and Robert Jr. named one of his sons Robert also. Thus, there is a tradition in this line of naming sons after the father. Where did this Robert Andrewson come from? Pat Anderson speculates (and admits that the conclusion is speculative) that it could be a Robert Anderson immigrated to Barbados on the Ann & Elizabeth in 1635 and made his way to Virginia after that. I have added Robert Anderson, 1613-1666, as the possible father of Robert I. I cannot, however, change the profile of Robert I as long as Richard is connected as his father. I believe (based on Pat Anderson's work) that Robert the Immigrant had three sons, Robert I, Bartelot, and John. I cannot change the siblings, however, for Robert I (Anderson-1605) to correct the siblings without changing Richard as Robert I's father. Thus, I include this note to describe who I think (still speculative) the actual parents and siblings of Robert I were.

Robert Anderson the Immigrant, the subject of this profile, was born 1613. Birth date confirmed by his age at immigration (21) in 1635 on the Ann & Elizbeth, as documented in the original immigration record published in Hotten's. That same record documents that he came to Barbados in 1635. He must or at least may have then traveled over to Virginia by 1636-1640, married, and had first son Robert I in York County by 1640-1645. Robert the Immigrant then appears in the one York County record, his jury service in 1657. One or two of the land records for Robert Anderson in early York and New Kent Counties may be his, rather than his son Robert's. Robert the Immigrant probably died about 1666, although there is no record documenting his death.

Robert had three presumed or known sons, Robert I, Bartelot, and John. The existence of Robert I is well-documented, see Anderson-1605; his relationship to Robert the Immigrant as father-son is uncertain. Bartelot and John were clearly brothers to each other based on a York County deposition in 1694 in which they testified that they were brothers and were 36 and 30 years old. Thus Bartelot the older was born 1658 and John the younger born 1664. Their relationship to older brother Robert I is uncertain - but the name Bartelot is very prominent in the line of Robert Anderson I. Two of Robert's sons (John and Matthew) named children Bartelot, and the Matthew Bartelot Andersons were significant figures in the future Hanover County. Given how unusual this name was, and the clear presence of these three Andersons in close geographic proximity, Pat Anderson concludes (and I agree) that they were probably brothers. The quirk in this conclusion is that their birth years are quite far apart - Robert I in 1642 or so, John the youngest 22 years later. No other children are known.

Notes for The Immigrant Robert Anderson: Robert Anderson, "the immigrant" was born in Great Britain in 1613. Hottens Emigrants by John Camden Hotten provides us with the fact that Robert Anderson, age 22, embarked in "Ann & Elizabeth" April 27, 1635 for Virginia. In York County Wills & Deeds on 12/3/1657 Robert Andrewson is listed as a juror. In the sources discussed below; Robert Anderson, Sr. of New Kent is credited as being born between 1640 and 1645 and his family is known to use the name Bartelot Anderson. In a 1694 York County deposition Bartelot Anderson and his brother John Anderson testify that they are 36 and 30 years old, thus born in 1658 and 1664. The land of Robert Anderson is listed in the Virginia Patents as adjacent Moyses Davies at Tottopottomoyes Creek in 1666. Robert Anderson, the immigrant then likely had sons Robert Anderson, Sr. of York then New Kent, Bartelot Anderson of York, and John Anderson of York and New Kent County.
