Biography

Carman was the son of George Brownlow Anderson and Sally Henry. He was always called "Doc" by his siblings and cousins because he was named for the doctor who delivered him. Carman wrote his own biography for family members doing school projects. In part, he wrote that he "was born near Lancaster, Kentucky. Twin boys, Harman and Carman. Harman died when a day or so old. Carman lived at Lancaster, KY until age 4, moved to Tuscola, Illinois and then to a farm nearby. ... He moved to Garrett, Ill, (a town of about 200) which was 8 miles west of Tuscola when he was in the fourth grade (1917) and to Villa Grove, Illinois a year later. He finished grade and high school there. He worked in Blue Island, Illinois (near Chicago) during summers after his sophomore and junior years. He went to the Chicago area when he graduated (May 1926) and worked at International Harvester Co. for three years."

He moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa in Sept 1929 to enter William Penn College. He met Irma at a school gym exhibit in 1932 and married her in 1933. After a stint in the CCC, he went back to school in 1934 and then taught in Denmark, Nevada, Webster City, Waterloo, and Riceville, Iowa. He briefly ran a retail store in Clarinda, Iowa before relocating to California, where he taught at Hosler Junior High School in Lynwood, California until his retirement.

He was an active HAM radio operator in the 1960's. I wish I knew what his "Handle" was.

Several years after his retirement, he returned to Iowa. He passed away in 1992.
