Research Notes

  • Robert's birth record does not name him[1] and it is only the probate of his grandmother's will that reveals his name and links him to the family.[3] His birth was just after the 1880 census and he does not show in his parents 1900 census but that is not surprising as he would have been nearly 20 years old by then. It is unfortunate that all almost all records of the 1890 census were destroyed by fire.
  • That the enlistement record[2] is for this Robert is reasonably certain. Although /ANDERSON/ is not a rare name, there were only 117 male births for that surname in 1880 through 1881. None of these is named Robert but there were 28 not named until after the birth was recorded. The number of babies named Robert born in the U.S. in 1880 was 2,415. The U.S. population at that time was 50,189,209 and the D.C. population was 177,624 or about 0.44%. This ratio can be restated as about 0.88% of males. Assuming an equal distribution we can expect that there is only a one in four chance that any of those 28 was named 'Robert.' We do not need to rest there as we gain confidence by matching the middle initial 'M' and can be guaranteed a match by observing that the record shows the enlistee to by 17 years and 11 months old on 21 Jul 1898 mapping directly to his 28 Aug 1880 birth.
  • There are no marriage, census, or death records that can be reliably linked to Robert but the following are possibilities:
    • A Robert Anderson from D.C. born circa 1881 married Elsie Nothey in 1903.[4][5]
    • A Robert Anderson from D.C. born circa 1882 was a boarder at the Ward home in the 1910 census.[6] The father's birthplace matches Robert's father but the mother's birthplace does not.
    • A Robert E Anderson from D.C. was head of household with a wife and two daughters.[7] The birthplace for both parents match the birthplaces for Robert's parents but the middle initial of 'E' conflicts with Robert's middle initial of 'M.'
