Hannah Payne was born sometime between 1770 and 1773. She was the daughter of Sarah Payne and Unknown.[1]
She married Richard Anderson on 11 January 1793 at Bedford, Virginia.[1] They had 3 sons:
John Anderson

Matthew Anderson
Hannah and Richard separated about 1800 and Hannah took up with Lewis Morgan. Lewis and Hannah Anderson never married. Hannah was his ‘common law’ wife, Lewis and Hannah’s children were given the last name Anderson at birth. Some years later, all of their children accepted Morgan as their last name.Their children were:
Information about the children’s names is recorded in the Will of Samuel Morgan’, father of Lewis Morgan. Samuel Morgan's Will was dated 20 November 1814 and was probated 26 June 1815 in Bedford County, Virginia.[4]
Samuel Morgan of Bedford County, Virginia bequeaths the remainder of his Estate to Hannah Anderson’s [last? youngest?] children to wit, Elizabeth Anderson Thomas Anderson, Jubal Anderson, Merriman Anderson, Sally Anderson, Mahala Anderson and if Hannah Anderson has any other or more children by Lewis Morgan it, or them to have an equal part. As long as Hannah Anderson and Lewis Morgan live together and work together for the support of their children they should live and work the land he owned. If they should part he desired that they both should live upon the land as long as the both remain single and they should have an equal part of all the ? belonging to the land. He desired Hannah Anderson’s first children to wit, John Anderson, William Anderson, & Matthew Anderson to live upon the land as long as they will work for themselves and for the support of the children but if they marry then may not live upon the land without agreeing with the aforementioned children to this purpose. After the death of Lewis Morgan & Hannah Anderson the above named children may possess the land and all that remains of his perishable property. All money owed to Samuel is to be collected and used for the benefit of the above named last children and if they [Lewis & Hannah] should part, Hannah Anderson may take and keep the money for the use and benefit of the said children. If either marries someone else, they are not to live any longer upon the said land. Written on the 20th of November 1814 in the presence of Barnett Payne, John Payne, John Liter? DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Hannah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Hannah:
Anderson-38041 and Payne-19984 appear to represent the same person because: Hannah Payne married Richard Anderson in 1793. She later separated from him and became the common law wife of Lewis Morgan. Two men named Barnett and Joseph Payne witnessed the Will of Lewis Morgan's father, Samuel. They were of Bedford, Virginia.
Anderson was Hannah's married name. According to the marriage record of Richard Anderson, Hannah's surname was Payne. Thus, I suggest her birth name should be changed to Payne.
I knew your name was familiar (through our common email with the Morgan testing group)! Haven’t heard from them in awhile.
Anyway, I attempted to research Hannah briefly. I wasn’t able to determine any maiden name for her. Her son Jubal Anderson Morgan was my ancestor so I’ve spent more time researching Morgans (and eventually I need to allocate more time to this).
The big issue I’ve had has been trying to resolve the birth years on the Lewis Morgan side, including for their children.
The children of Lewis Morgan and Hannah were Elizabeth Anderson, Thomas Anderson, Jubal Anderson, Mahala Anderson, Sally Anderson, and Merriman Anderson.
I wish WikiTree had more selections for relationship: married, single, common law, and others. Lewis Morgan needs to remain as her spouse because common law is accepted as marriage.
If you have proven that this Hannah’s maiden name was Payne you should change it and you could also link her ‘first’ husband Richard Anderson here. I think I will leave my non Wiki tree as is for now until I look at this.
The Will of Lewis Morgan's father, Samuel, was witnessed by Barnett Payne, John Payne, and John (Leter?). Richard Anderson's sister, Sarah, was married to James Payne who had brothers named John and Barnett. They lived in Bedford, Virginia. For this reason, I believe it is reasonable to conclude that Sararh Payne who married Richard Anderson on 11 January 1793 at Bedford, Virginia, is the Sarah Anderson who was the common law wife of Lewis Morgan. I plan to create a profile for Sarah Payne and then I'll merge Sarah Anderson into Sarah Payne so that the url will have the proper last name.
I don’t understand why a new profile needed to be created. The changes could easily be made to the existing profile for Hannah. Now that the new one exists, you should merge the tw.
However, the details and connections on this one should remain in place as primary, including keeping Lewis Morgan, the children, bio, and sources.
I created a new profile so that the ID would be Payne-19984 instead of Anderson-38041. In addition the edit page will show the birth name as Payne instead of Anderson. My understanding is that the last name at birth can't be changed any other way. If I'm wrong, let me know how it's done and I'll keep that in mind if I ever need to do so again. Definitely retainign all of the biography and sources.
I haven’t encountered having to change a profile’s maiden name before and didn’t consider the ID. I understand now why a new profile must be created. Thanks for pointing that out.
Also, after you do the merge, if it doesn’t add you as profile manager, I would be happy to add you.
Lewis Morgan and his ‘common law’ wife Hannah Anderson lived on the property once owned by Samuel Morgan. Samuel willed the 300 acres of land to Hannah’s children. Lewis and Hannah lived on the property until they died. The property was located In Bedford County, Virginia. Place of death for Lewis and Hannah has been changed to Bedford County, Virginia. If a source exists with a different location, please share.
