Austin Thomas Anderson was born on 28th August 1868 on Mauritius. He was a son of William Mather Anderson, Acting Governor of Mauritius, and Jeanette Neilley. He studied at Eton before being commissioned in the Royal Artillery. After a time serving in India, he was posted to Queensland over the period of Australia's Federation (1899-1902).
He married Ethel Louise Mason on 8th October 1904 in Christ Church, Ahmednagar, Bombay, India.[1] On the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, he sailed with the 7th (Meerut) Division for France. He sent Ethel and their young daughter to live at Cambridge.
Appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 1918, Austin commanded the 48th (South Midland) Division's artillery in 1920-24. Austin retired from the army in 1924 with the rank of Brigadier General and settled in Sydney; purchasing a house, Ball Green, at Turramurra, which Ethel filled with Indian bric-à-brac. From 1927 Austin was successively private secretary to Governors Sir Dudley de Chair and Sir Philip Game, and to Sir Alexander Hore-Ruthven as governor and governor-general. For many years he was chairman of the Boys' Brigade in Sydney. He published several military works, and articles and letters in the Sydney Morning Herald.
He passed away, aged 80 years, in 22nd February 1949 at Ball Green.[2] Being before the days of superannuation and 'golden handshakes', his death created financial concerns for Ethel, who stoically overcame these with increased writing.
