Death

OBITUARY. Council's Head Gardener Killed
Head gardener for the Wollongong City Council, Mr. Jack Ellerslie Anderson, was fatally injured in a road accident at Woonona last Thursday. Aged 59 years, the late Mr. Anderson, who resided at Dudley Street, Wollongong, died in Bulli Hospital a few hours after being injured. The accident occurred about mid-day, near the intersection of Hopetoun Street with the Highway. He had alighted from the truck and was crossing the road when he was hit by a motor van and thrown heavily to the road. He sustained a compound fracture of the skull. The late Mr. Anderson was appointed by Bulli Shire Council in. January, 1945, to establish and take charge of a nursery at the rear of the Council Chambers. Then, when the amalgamation of councils occurred, he became head gardener for the whole City. The nursery at Bulli is one of the largest 'Municipal undertakings of its kind in the State and from it has come the many thousands of trees and shrubs planted throughout parks, reserves and streets of Greater Wollongong. Throughout the years the work, of the late Mr. Anderson and his staff, has become of increasing importance and they were ever willing to co-operate in the loan of potted shrubs for many an appeal opening. In recent months he had been preparing elaborate plans for decorations for the Queen's visit. The late Mr, Anderson is survived by his widow. The funeral left Parsons' Bulli chapel on Saturday for Woronora Crematorium.[2]

Jack was buried at Woronora Cemetery, NSW[3]
