Biography

William Jessie Anderson, son of John M. Anderson and Harriet Rebecca James, was born on 15 October 1882 in Conway, Laclede County, Missouri, United States.[1][2] He was enumerated with his parents and siblings during the 1900 census in Sugar Creek Township, Barry County. His occupation was given as mail crier.[3]

He married Bertha Ethel Oliver, daughter of James Polk Oliver and Mary Jane Newton, on 2 December 1905 in Carroll County, Arkansas.[4]

Will and Bertha had only one son, who died the day he was born in December 1908. The couple was enumerated during the 1910 census, living with his wife's widowed grandmother in Berryville, Carroll County, Arkansas. Will worked as a hardware salesman, while Bertha and her grandmother each worked as a "washer lady."[5]

When he registered in Berryville for the draft in 1918, Will was employed as a carpenter for the M&NA Railroad Company in Eureka Springs. He was described as being of medium height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair.[6] By 1920 they lived on Mud Street in Prairie Township, where he worked as a house carpenter.[7] In 1930 they owned a home on Newton Street, which was valued at $1600. Bertha's sister and niece lived with them through at least 1940.[8][9]

He registered in Berryville for the draft in 1942 during World War II. He was described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, 196 pounds, with blue eyes, brown hair, and ruddy complexion.[1][10]

Will was widowed in 1947.[11] He died of heart failure at age 77 on 23 April 1960 in Berryville, Carroll County, Arkansas,[12][2] and was buried four days later at Berryville Memorial Cemetery.[13]
