Lloyd and Mary were avid mountaineers and part of the Mountaineers Society.[4] Seeing a need for quality gear, they created REI in 1938, a consumer cooperative.[5]
In 1980, he published the book "Climbing Notebook".
In 1993, they were inducted into the Cooperative Business Association's Hall of Fame.[6]
