Biography

James Anderson was born about 1726. [1] His parents were Lawrence Anderson II and Mary "Mae" Kirkpatrick. He married Margaret Troy/Trogs about 1746 in Cumberland Co., VA. He bought 400 acres of land from Anne Mayo in Cumberland Co., VA (Goochland County at the time). Anne was the very wealthy widow of Joseph Mayo and these 400 acres were part of a 4,740 acre patent that Joseph Mayo had received in August of 1740. James paid Ann Mayo twenty four pounds for the land. This land had a small creek running through it known as Soke Arse Creek or Run.

Virginia Chancery Court Record 1856-001 John Anderson & Wife (Frances Anderson) vs Admr of Lawrence Anderson etc. (Study of this document has proven that James Anderson, father of Lawrence Anderson, died in 1799 and his will was published in Carolina County, VA in 1799. Page 83 includes the statement of John Anderson confirming the date the will of the correct James Anderson was submitted into Caroline Co, VA court. "P 83: 'Humbly complaining therewith unto your Honour your Orator John Anderson & Francis his wife, that in the year 1799 James Anderson of the County of Caroline made his last will and testament which was duly admitted to record in the County Courts of said County of Caroline and attested ..here with exhibited marked … will of the said James Anderson among other things bequeathed as follows to wit. I lend to my daughter in law, Rhody Anderson the tract of land, containing one hundred and fifty acres whereon my son Lawrence Anderson lived, during her life or widowhood, and after her death or marriage the land to be sold and the money to be divided amongst her children namely Lawrence, Mary, Fanny, (…), and Nancy to them and their heirs forever.? That the said Rhoda hold the said land until …the year she departed this life – that then said Mary and Nancy Anderson departed this life in the lifetime of the said Rhoda, intermarried and with…..leaving your orator and the said Lawrence Anderson their only heirs at law – this in the mean while your Orator had married your orator, and in the 23rd day of April 1832 your orator and oratain sold this …

(Many researchers have thought the father of Lawrence Anderson was the James that published a Cumberland Co, VA will in 1782. This Chancery Document gives proof that it is not the same James Anderson. Does anyone have a copy of the Caroline Co, VA will of James Anderson admitted into record 1799?)
