George is named as the son of John Anderson in a personal property deed which John made to his elder sons in Pulaski County, Virginia, before moving to Pope County, Illinois:

Civil War: George enlisted 12 Aug 1862 as a Union army private in John M Raum's Golconda Company A, 120th Illinois Infantry. On 14 Apr 1863, he was discharged with a certificate of disability following a one month stay in the hospital at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.[3] The physicians report states that he was unable to do any duty since November last. His condition is reported to involve almost total blindness in his right eye as well as chronic abscesses in the region of the left ear involving the mastoid cells of the temporal bone. He later received a pension #70354 on 3 Sep 1866. Following his death, his wife applied for a widow's pension in Feb 1889 and received $12 a month.[2][4]
