Biography

of Woodville and Prospect House, Dunbell, County Kilkenny

John was born in 1757.

He succeeded his father in the lands at Dunbell.

Old Dunbell having been destroyed by fire in 1801, he built Prospect Prospect House.

He served as a private in the Gowran Yeomanry Cavalry (a voluntary corps) against the rebels in 1798.

His sword is in the museum of the Kilkenny Archeological Society.

John Anderson lies buried at Kylebeg Graveyard in Kilkenny, Ireland. The grave inscription read:

" Died deeply and deservedly regretted on the 1st day of April 1839. John Anderson Of Prospect, Parish of Dunbell, aged 87 years."

Near him are laid the ashes of "Jane, his beloved wife, who exchanged time for eternity on the 18th June 1836, aged 89 years".

Underneath in italics, it says: "Mark the perfect man and behold the upright for the end of that man is peace. Psalm 37."

Kilkenny Militia Ensign 28 November 1854 and Lieutenant 12 September 1855.http://mural.maynoothuniversity.ie/5279/1/Liam_Bolger_20140722145036.pdf

Choosing to serve God in religion or the military were professions highly regarded by adult males of Kilkenny’s second tier Protestant gentry families. Their contribution to the British army was especially significant. The Doyle family of Bramblestown, county Kilkenny, supplied six generals to the British army, 1756- 1856.44 In the early nineteenth century the Anderson family o f Prospect, Kilkenny, used to boast that every rank in the British army, from private to colonel, was occupied by an Anderson. They had good grounds for their assertion and there cannot be many families that show a better military record as regards the number who have donned a uniform .
