Garland was born on 6 August 1769 in Virginia.

He married Mary Ann Winston and they were the parents of one known son:

  • Alfred Anderson

He married Mary Minor on 6 October 1803 in Louisa, Virginia. The surety for their marriage license was Peter Minor.[1]

Garland and Mary were the parents of at least the following children:[2]

Garland's Will written 4 Jun 1829 - 2nd wife's children, namely Franklin, Peter, Robert, Ellen and Mary.

  • Peter Minor Anderson (1808-1876)
  • Louisa Minor Anderson (1812- Feb 1829)

  • Robert L Anderson

After the death of Mary, he married Sally Trabue on 3 April 1823 in Adair County, Kentucky.[3]

They were the parents of at least the following children:

  • Martha Watson Anderson
  • Eliza Burbridge Anderson

Garland died on 20 August 1829 in Green County, Kentucky. He was buried in Greensburg City Cemetery.[4]

The executors of Garland's will were John Barret and his son Peter Anderson. They produced his will in court on 21 September 1829. Alfred Anderson acted as the security for them.[5]

  • Garland was appointed guardian on 17 November1823 in Green County, Kentucky to his children under the age of 21.
  • It is probable that Elizabeth B Anderson and Louisa Anderson died before June of 1829 since they are not mentioned in their father's will. He specifically names Franklin, Peter, Robert and Ellen as the children of his second wife.
