Charles was born in 1880 in Magor, not far from the coast of the Severn Estuary.
He married in 1900 when he was only 20 and his wife Margaret Jane Morgan was only 18. In the following 13 years they had six children, although Charles would not live to see the last one, Cyril, who was born 6 weeks after he died in the Universal Colliery, Senghenydd disaster.
