Jöns was a farm worker and laborer in Skåne. He and his wife moved often, when he took on one-year contracts at various farms. Consequently, their children were all born in different locations. From 1870, Jöns is listed as "åbo", meaning that instead of being a farmhand, he now farmed land that he held the rights to, albeit not owning it. He farmed part of Hunnestad No 14 until 1886, when he moved to Snårestad with wife and the two younger children. His son Anders took over the rights to farm Hunnestad No 14.
