Biography

Carl Johan Andersson was born in 1840 in the farming village of Westrahult (aka Vastrahult), Vena, Kalmar, Sweden to Anders Johan Andersson Sundberg and Sara Maria Johansdotter. Carl married Anna Maria Jonsdotter Lindberg in Vena on June 8, 1867. The couple had 7 children together in Westrahult where they worked as farm servants. Carl Johan followed the traditional naming pattern for his children, giving them all the last name of Carlson. This tradition was dying out in most areas of Sweden by the 19th Century. In 1892 the family, preceded by two grown up children, immigrated to the United States, settling near Beresford, South Dakota on a homestead. In 1903 Carl Johan and some sons applied for homesteads near Radville, Saskatchewan, Canada at Brookings. After some work preparing the land and house, they moved the entire family there about 1905. Carl Johan farmed NE 34-6-18-W2 for at least 10 years before he died on Oct. 17, 1915 in Radville. [1]
