Biography

Jonas Andersson was born on 9 Jan 1859, in Tångeråsen, in the parish of Offerdal, province of Jämtland, Sverige [Sweden], and baptized there on 16 Jan 1859. He was the eldest son of Anders Gudfastsson (or Gufastsson, as it was spelled in the Offerdal parish records of Jonas's birth), a 31-year-old crofter (torpare) in the village of Tångeråsen, and his wife, Maria Jonasdotter.[1]

As of 13 Oct 1864, the family had moved to Backen in the nearby parish of Lith (or Lit), also in the province of Jämtland. Then, in 1868, Jonas's father left to try to establish a place for his family on the frontier of the United States of America, leaving his family in Backen, where they lived with friends or relatives.[2] His wife and his four sons left Backen to join him in America on 21 Jun 1879.[3]

Jonas may have emigrated to the United States earlier, in 1876,[4] although his later statements to the South Dakota census enumerators indicated a date of arrival in 1877.[5][6] He would initially have joined his father in Minnesota, probably changing his given name to John at that time and possibly taking "Gustafson" as his surname. Later, all of the sons changed their surname to "Anderson," although John retained Gustafson as his chosen middle name. He remained for some time in Minnesota (where his son, George, was born to an unknown wife, probably in 1890 or 1891, since George was 29 at the time of the 1920 census, which was dated in January of 1920).[7]

His brother Gufast (or Gudfast, but known in the United States as "Gustaf" and called "Gust") immigrated from Sweden in 1879, stayed at least briefly with the family in Minnesota,[8] but settled in Salem, South Dakota in 1880.[9] Since Salem was founded in 1880,[10] Gust may have been one of the original settlers there, but he encouraged his brothers to join him, resulting in multiple family homesteads established in the vicinity.

Although John apparently married in Minnesota, his first wife must have died by 1894, since he married Mathilda Sarafia Sundstrom, a fellow immigrant from Sweden, in 1895, probably in Salem, McCook County, South Dakota.[11] Mathilda was a fellow immigrant from Sweden, born on 26 Nov 1868, in the parish of Sävar in Västerbotten.[12]

By late 1895, John and Mathilda had settled in quarters at the back of the general store in Salem which he owned and operated with his brother, Gust. There his son, Hjalmar, was born on 25 Nov 1895. John had joined the Salem Lutheran Church that same year and had the infant Hjalmar baptized there on 2 Dec 1895.[13][14] He was sufficiently successful that, by the time of the 1900 United States Census, he had purchased a house, although they were reportedly living in the household of Selma Uffard.[15] In 1901, Mathilda's sister, Carolina Magdalena (Sundström) Sandberg, died. In accordance with Carolina's wishes, John and Mathilda adopted her infant daughter, Esther (born on 27 Jan 1901), who became Esther Anderson.

In 1910, they were living on Washington Avenue in Salem City, McCook County, South Dakota.[16]

In the South Dakota state census of 1905, John described his occupation as "merchant."[17] In the South Dakota state census of 1915, John described his occupation as "Real Estate Dealer."[18] This may indicate that he and Gust had sold the store by 1915.

In 1920, John owned a green grocery in Upland, Ontario Township, San Bernardino County, California, where he had relocated with his family, including his 29-year-old son, George. Sharing the family residence (and expenses, in the form of rent) on North Euclid Avenue[19] were his younger brother, Andrew, and Andrew's family.[20]

John died in Upland, San Bernardino County, California, on 3 Jun 1936.[21] He was interred in Bellevue Memorial Park in Ontario, San Bernardino County, California.[22]

Mathilda died in Upland on 3 Feb 1943, and was interred with her husband at Bellevue Memorial Park in Ontario.[23][24]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
