He ran away from St Joseph's College Sydney aged 14, and spent much of his youth in drovers' camps as a helper, in the Northern regions of New South Wales, near Narrabri and the Pilliga Scrub. He was a State Lawn Bowling entity ( National Park Newcastle), an excellent fisherman, and an experienced bushman. Annual school holidays for grandsons consisted of camping trips with Perce for fishing and hunting expeditions.
