Published in The Sacramento Bee on July 2, 2013 GEIST, Bernice Esme The quiet, strong spirit of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, passed away peacefully at home, June 8, 2013, comforted by her loving family. Born November 15, 1924, Bernice was the first born of seven children to Severin and Esme Andreassen. Her happy childhood was spent with her three sisters and three brothers on the family sugar cane farm in the tropical paradise of Port Douglas Australia. After her school years she ventured into the working world and soon met her smitten new beau, Woodrow Wilson Geist, an American Army service man stationed in Australia during World War II. After a long distance courtship Bernice came to the U.S., bound to be a 'war bride' in 1947. She and 'Woody' married soon thereafter. They spent their 55 married years in Sacramento raising their two children. Woody in business for himself and Bernice, his helpmate at his side. They enjoyed RVing in their retirement years until Woody could no longer drive. Bernice devoted seven years to his care until he passed away in 2003, very soon after losing their beloved son Graeme in 2002. Her grace and strength never waivered during her 88 years. A woman of few words, never 'chatty', she was dignified, honest, faithful, kind and never critical, complaining, jealous or gossipy. She was as God describes as what 'love is'. She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her daughter Nola (Ron), 3 grandsons and daughter in law and in Australia, her 3 sisters, 3 brothers and their spouses and many nieces and nephews. Private graveside services were held per her request, June 12, 2013.
