HENRY D. ANDREW DIES AT CHICAGO Noted Singer For Thirty Years And Night Clerk Of Nelson Hotel Ten Years
Henry D. Andrew, who had spent most of his sixty years of life in Rockford and who was widely known as night clerk of the Nelson hotel and for his talent as a vocalist died yesterday morning at St. Luke's hospital, Chicago, where he had been a patient for the last week. The body was brought to Rockford last evening.
Mr. Andrew was attacked by pneumonia last February, and he was a patient at Rockford hospital for a time. He improved somewhat and was able to be about at intervals, but his progress was so slow and his condition so unsatisfactory that he went to Chicago to have the benefit of treatment by specialists and an operation.
Henry D. Andrew was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Andrew and was born in the Scotch settlement, near Argyle, Ill. in 1856, but had spent the greater part of his life in Rockford.
Had Fine Bass Voice He was possessed of a bass voice of wide ranger and a peculiar timbre that made him extremely effective as second bass in male voice vocalism, this being first demonstrated with the Rifles' quartet of the eighties, composed of himself, E. M. Penfield, Charles Dennis and Dr. L. F. Foote, which was a feature of the social life of the Rockford Rifles when that military organization had a national reputation. Late he made several concert tours with the Weber quartet, associated with M. E. Barnes, Charles G. Roger and L. Judd West, and in recent years sang with the Imperial quaret, his musical career extending over thirty years. He appeared in many amateur operatic and ministral productions with signal success.
Was Elk and Mason He was a member of Rockford lodge of Elks and of Masonic fraternity. For the last ten years he had been employed as night clerk at the Nelson hotel.
He is survived by a son, Harry, in training in the cavalry at Chicago, a sister, Miss Minnie Andrew of the Stewart store, and three brothers, Dr. J. D. Andrew and Frank H. Andrew of Chicago, and Fred Andrew of Grant avenue.
Deceased was a man of genial personality and kindly disposition whose worth and dependability won the warm regard of a wide circle of friends, who view his passing with sincere regret.
Funeral services, in charge of the Masons, will be held at the family home for many years, 515 North Church street, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clck. Interment will be made in the West Side cemetery.[5]
