From the History of Piscataquis County, Maine: [19]

Ephraim Andrews was one of the earliest settlers of Parkman, Maine (date around 1810). At some unknown point, Ephraim Andrews was afflicted with a morbid and partially insane state of mind, which broke up his family and caused him to sell and seek a home elsewhere. He was very peculiary constituted. He had good intellectual powers, good business capacities and a vigorous physical constitution. But, when in a melancholy state, he was insanely jealous and bitterly revengful. Although surrounded with good neighbors, he would drive his plow-team all day with an axe on his shoulder, fearing that some of them would take his life.
As his sons grew to manhood, they did not treat his ideosyncrasies with much charity or patience, and his insanity increased. They regarded him as dangerous and prepared a small cage which they shut him up in. But he was marvelously ingenious in contriving and making escapes. They would capture him and force him back, and this would aggravate his insanity and rage.
In March 1814, he had broken out and his sons surrounded him to retake him. He had armed himself with a small axe, and brandishing it, bade them stand off at their peril. But his youngest son, Samuel, then about fourteen years old, not believing that he would strike, daringly pressed up. The enraged father struck him a full blow in the face, with the edge of the axe, --nearly a fatal stroke. The father was then committed to the county jail. The son slowly recovered, but carried an ugly scar to his grave.
The old man became more calm and was set at liberty. But the trouble continued. He separated from his wife and gave all his property to Robert Herring jr., who gave bonds to maintain him comfortably during his natural life. There he had a good home, lived in listless ease and sought his own entertainments. At times, the evil spirit would return. Twice he left Mr. Herring and sued for the forfeiture of his bond, but failed to obtain it. For services in the Revolutionary army, he received a small pension. He died suddenly on his ninetieth birthday in Mr. Herring's house.

In the 1840 census of pensioners, Ephraim (age 83) was living in Guilford, Piscataquis, Maine, with Robert Herring.[20]

Ephraim died at the age of 88 on 22 March 1845 in Guilford, Piscataquis, Maine.[21][22] and was buried on 25 March 1845 French's Cemetery in Parkman, Piscataquis, Maine, USA.[22] Ephraim's estate amounted to one pension payment that was owed him.[23] Each heir received $3.90 from the estate:

  • Ephraim Andrews, Jr.
  • Sumner Wood (husband of daughter Mary Andrews)
  • Samuel Andrews
  • William Robinson, (husband of daughter Keziah Andrews)
  • John Andrews
  • Augusta Stafford (daughter of daughter Pamela Andrews who married John Stafford)
  • Sarah Cummings (daughter who married Peter Cummings)
