Biography

Alternative spelling Androwes, Androws.

Daniel was born about 1650.

Marriage License: Andrews, Daniel (Androse), bachelor, 25, son of Daniel Androse, of St. Stephen, Walbrook, London, esq., and Mary Harlakenden, 19, daughter of Mary Collier, of St. Foster, London, widow, who consents—at St. Giles, Cripplegate, St. Sepulchre, or St. Mary Magdalen, Old Fish Street, London. 15 May, 1672. F. Page n43[1]

He was a gentleman of some standing and she was an heiress of substance.

By June 1676, they had 3 daughters Ann the eldest then Mary and Dorothy.[2]

A memorial is inscribed on the south wall of the chancel of Earls Colne church above which arms in a quarterly of four : Harlakenden, Willis, Londenoys and Oxenbridge.

The inscription reads

“the adjoining monumt of the Harlakendens repaired, and the inscription made perfect (from the books of the Herald’s office, wherein the inscription was entered at a Visitation before he had suffered any decay), at the charge of Mary Androwes, relict of Daniel Androwes, of Low Layton, in the county of Essex Esq.
In pious memory of that ancient family of which she is the only child of the last heir male. Sept. The 30th, anno d’ni 1729.
Underneath interr’d lye the remains of Daniel Androwes Esq, who died January 26, 1681. And of Mary, his relict, who followed him to rest Octobr the 26, 1729. After near 48 years widowhood, employed in a religious and unaffected piety to God; a prudent care of her children; a frugal managemt of her estate; a constant beneficence to her friends; a ready usefulness to her neighbours, and an extensive charity to the poor; adorned wth knowledge uncommon to her sex, and candour rare among men. This inscription added in filial piety by Richard Androwes their surviving son.”[3]
