Biography

Churchill was born in autumn 1860, the first son and second child of William Andrews and Jane Berry.[1]

Churchill's family lived at Kew Lane, No. 2 Park Place.[2] Brother Spencer, followed by sisters Jessie and Jane were added to the family. Spencer and Jane passed away in infancy, leaving the family with five members living at 9 Shaftebury Villas, as reflected in the 1871 census.[3]

With father William's improving position, the family moved to Westminster, the 1881 census found them at 19 Whitehall Place. The 1881 census revealed Churchill at age 20 worked as a solicitor's clerk.[4]

In spring 1885, Churchill immigrated to Australia aboard SS Orient. After a trip of 45 days, he arrived in Melbourne on June 24.[5] His early movements within Australia are unclear, but by summer 1897 he was living in Queensland, where he married one Elizabeth Ann Harrison.[6]

Voters lists put Churchill and Elizabeth living in Rockhampton between 1908 and 1912, where he was listed as Charles. Evidently he was interacting with his Limpus cousins who lived in the area, descendants of his deceased aunt Ellen. By 1916 he and Elizabeth had apparently split, with Churchill found living alone in Clermont:

Elizabeth Ann Andrews proceeded against her husband, Charles Berry Andrews, for having left her without adequate means of support. There was no appearance by the complainant. Mr. J. Pattison, who appeared for the defendant, said that the defendant had been for many years the caretaker of stores of the Mount Morgan Gold-mining Company in Quay-street, and when the office was closed down he went west and obtained a position on Logan Downs, leaving his wife behind. He gave her what she required. In the meantime the complainant took a boarding-house and used the defendant's furniture. The defendant returned to Rockhampton and asked the complainant to go west with him, but she said that she did not want to live in the bush. The complainant and the defendant had not had a dispute before. From Logan Downs the defendant went to Ambo, and, under the new act regarding stations [ie. ranches], cottages were required to be erected for boundary riders [ie. ranch patrolmen]. The defendant again asked the complainant to go out and live with him, but she refused. The complainant then issued a summons against the defendant. The complainant had sold the furniture belonging to the defendant, and which was certainly a fair amount. He asked that the case be dismissed. The Police Magistrate said that the complainant had been notified of the date of the hearing of the case, and as she had not put in an appearance, he would dismiss the complaint.[7]

By 1919 Churchill lived in Muttaburra, and by 1925 in Toombul. After being separated for over a decade, wife Elizabeth passed away in June 1928. The following month, Churchill married widow Annie Louisa Rycroft at Brisbane.[8] They resided at her home at 100 Jackson Street, Whitstanes, adjacent the Brisbane suburb of Hamilton. Annie passed away in 1935.

Churchill Berry Andrews passed away in autumn 1936.[9][10]

Research Notes

As Churchill died intestate, the Queensland authorities took responsibility to administer his affairs, and their advertisements imply that Churchill had a son.[11] Genealogical evidence of any children remains elusive.
