Biography

"of Sharon" in 1800, thence to Paris, & "No. 2" Maine

Darius Andrews of Taunton married Keziah Caswell on 24 Dec 1793 in Middleborough, Massachusetts, USA. [1]

Research

Darius died after 1793, because that's the year he got married. He was born during or before 1779, because that's the year his father Josiah died of smallpox (April 1778). SOME source (yet to be identified) said he was "of Sharon" (Mass.) in 1800, after which he moved to Paris (Maine), and then to "No. 2" (Maine).

Why is it more likely for Darius here to have been the son of Ebenezer (Jr) than the son of Josiah (Jr) & Mary (Padelford)?
posted by Jill Azadian
Hi Jill--My rationale is this: 1) The list of Josiah and Mary (Padelford) Andrews' children does not leave room for Darius to be born about 1771 as Otis was b. 1770 and Hannah was b. 1771. 2) The "Warrants to Warn Persons from Hanover," included in my 7 Oct 2022 comment below, appears to list the extended family, notably : "Ebenezer Andrews, his wife Faith and Ebenezer Andrews, Jr., and his wife Sarah and their children Darius, Joshua, and Seth, “who came last from the town of Taunton....April last.” Ebenezer Andrews, Jr. and Sarah Eliot m. 26 June 1770 in Taunton.

Per the information below, I believe Darius to be the son of Ebenezer Jr. and Sarah (Elliott) Andrews of Taunton and Hanover:

Marriage record (transcribed) states Ebenezer Andrews Ju. and Sarah Elliot were joined in marriage in Taunton by James Williams, J.P. 1770 June 26.

This family listed in a court record (Plymouth Court Records, 1686-1859 v. 3, pg 275) from NEHGS:

“Warrants to Warn Persons from Hanover “…Constable Israel Perry received warrant from selectmen Nathaniel Sylvester, Lemuel Curtis, and Joseph Cushing to warn Samuel Clay, “who came last from Boston in September last,” Samuel Bates, his wife Mercy and their children Mercy, Lemuel, and Eunice, “who came last from Pembroke in April last,” Ebenezer Andrews, his wife Faith and Ebenezer Andrews, Jr., and his wife Sarah and their children Darius, Joshua, and Seth, “who came last from the town of Taunton....April last,” Sarah Waterman and her children James and Calvin, “who came last from Scituate or Halifax...about August last,” Calvin Curtis and his apprentice Benjamin Collamer, “who came last from Scituate in August last or much about the time and reside in the house that was Gideon Stetson’s,” Nehemiah Palmer, his wife Abigail and their children Marlborough and Elijah, “who came last from Scituate in January last and Reside in the house which belongs to Lemuel Curtis,” John Chapman, his wife Ruth and their children Ruth, John, and Sarah, “who came last from Pembroke in March last,” to depart. Perry reported he warned all of the above persons to depart, “except Jacob Gurney and Elizabeth his wife who I did not see nor warn out,” 1 July 1773.

Kathrine, Thank you for adding your research - now there are just a few questions to resolve the profile identity:

Although his parentage is not confirmed, this Darius Andrews profile is rightly the spouse of Keziah Caswell, and father of Philena (Andrews) Reading.

Is this the correct family in which to add Peres? (As in your link https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~megen/genealogy/andrmain.html ) Was Peres the brother of Philena?

Or is there yet another Darius Andrews to research?

Cheers, Josephine

Hi Josephine--This Darius is the father of both Peres and Philena, yes--and other children with Keziah and more with a later wife--all of which you can find using my link you reference.

Do note that there were two Peres/Perez Andrewses in the area (one in Sumner, Darius's son, and one in Minot/Auburn/Buckfield, whose lineage is more unclear).

But don't hesitate to write back with questions. I'm a direct descendant of Darius through Peres and Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Andrews and have been working on this family for quite a while. I'm happy to have the line better established.

Best wishes!

Kathrine

Thank you Kathrine, I have removed Darius's parents in preparation for the addition of the parents you know to be correct (hopefully with sources!)

I will also remove myself as manager and from the trusted list so that you have free rein to correct this famiy line.

Cheers, Josephine

Darius isn't named in the guardianship list (see his siblings for link to papers if you have Ancestry.com subscription). He wouldn't have been old enough to slip through the guardianship net as his parents married in 1769 and his father died in 1778. He probably wouldn't have been a posthumous child, as he would have been about 15 when he married in 1793 - although that's not unknown. If he was one of the sons listed under Mary's guardianship he may have assumed the name Darius in later life, perhaps a second name?
a. I don't have an ancestry.com subscription. But feel free to post that info here, if you like.

b. I will check for the source whenever I get around to finishing the protracted move in the middle of which I am currently. c. So, you're not sure he IS the bro. of Hannah, Otis, etc?

The information is only that she was granted guardianship to those four children, no mention of Darius.

I have not found information that Darius is the son of Josiah Andrews and Mary Padelford. Did either parent have a previous marriage? Is there another Josiah Andrews of the same era? (I saw a possibility of Josiah Andrews having married Marcy Elliott (daughter of Marcy Elliott) who was his mother in law's executor.

Andrews-19744 and Andrews-16289 appear to represent the same person because: same wife
