Biography

Matthew ANDREWS was born on 12 July 1859 at Mangrove Creek, NSW.[1][2]

Matthew was the first of 8 children of John Andrews and Sarah Craft.

He married Ada GREEN in 1883 (the same year his younger brother Alfred married Ada's sister Amanda GREEN). Together, Matthew and Ada had 7 children:

In 1885, a Mat. ANDREWS is listed as landholder of a 200 acre property at “Dubbon Gully” near Mangrove Creek, owning 3 horses, 6 cattle and 10 pigs. His father John and brother Alfred are also listed as holding 130 and 50 acres, respectively, near Mangrove Creek.[3]

Matthew is listed in the 1891 Census as living in “Gundrell” at Mangrove Creek in a household with three other males and two females, presumably his sons Frederick, Lyall and David, as well as Ada and their daughter Agnes.[4]

In the 1901 Census, he is listed as living in Mangrove in a household together with five other males and one female.[5]

His wife Ada (Green) Andrews (b.1864) passed away on 6 June 1905 at Wollombi, a small village about 70km North of Mangrove and the administrative centre of the region. Ada was aged only 41 years and their youngest child Gladys was barely 18 months old. She was buried at Wollombi Cemetery, Anglican, Section: AA, Lot: 3.[6]

He is listed in the 1930 electoral rolls as living in “Mangrove Creek, farmer, M [male]”[7]

Matthew died on 17 March 1935.[8][9]

Matthew was buried not at Mangrove, but in the same plot as his wife Ada at Wollombi Cemetery.[10][11]
