Biography

No source seems to exist to support a last name at birth or anything about her origins other than likely in England given her age to have a daughter born about 1625.

After her first (assumed first) husband William Hopkins died about 1643 or 1644, she remarried to Richard Whitehead before his will was written 26 Apr 1645. Richard died likely in June 1645 as his will was proved 26 Jun 1645.[1]

The will mentioned wife Mary and bequeathed to "daughter in law Mary Lewes" along with the phrase "whilst she was sole and unmarried" but it is not clear if this phrase refers to the mother before marrying Whitehead or the daughter before marrying Captain William Lewis. The will also mentions "brother in law Hugh Hopkins" which would seem to refer to a brother of Mary's first husband William Hopkins, especially since he was the one entrusted with the one hundred pound gift from mother to daughter.

According to Anderson's "Great Migration" project, Mary was married to Richard Whitehead after her marriage to William Hopkins but Anderson does not make claims as to her maiden name or origin. Text follows: [2] On 2 September 1670 a deposition was made regarding "Mary Whitehead the known mother of Mary the wife of Lt. William Lewis of Farmington" (Manwaring 1:215 (Mary, widow of William Hopkins, married as her second husband Richard Whitehead of Windsor))"

So Mary must have died after this date but a specific record has apparently not yet been found.

Adding the one source I've found so far, Anderson's "Great Migration" which does list her as married to Richard Whitehead but does not claim a maiden name or birth date/location

It is very unlikely she was born in Connecticut around 1600. It didn't exist then. Might she have been from England?
