Thomas Andrews, born in 1873 near Belfast, was the son of Thomas Andrews and Elizabeth Pirrie. His uncle, William James Pirrie, was head owner of Harland and Wolff, a Belfast shipbuilding company. Andrews began working at the firm in 1889 and rose quickly, becoming known for his innovative ship designs. When work began on the Titanic in March 1909, he was chief of the design department as well as the managing director of the company.
As the executive responsible for overseeing the creation of a ship's plans, Andrews found it useful to accompany new liners on their maiden voyages. On the evening of April 14, Andrews was in his cabin on the Titanic consulting blueprints and making notes when Captain Smith sent a message asking him to come to the bridge at once. It was Andrews who, after touring the ship, told the captain that it would sink in a few hours. He directed passengers to the lifeboats and encouraged them to put on their lifebelts. He was last seen in the First Class smoking room.
Andrews had been Managing Director of Harland & Wolff ship builders in Belfast, but lost his life aboard RMS Titanic, of which he was chief designer, when the ship sank in the North Atlantic on 15 April 1912.
In 1917, following his appointment to the London Office of Harland & Wolff, Henry Pierson Harland married Helen (Nellie) Reilly Andrews (1881-1966), widow of his former management colleague at Harland & Wolff, Thomas Andrews (1873-1912).
