Biography

This profile is part of the Chebacco Parish, Massachusetts One Place Study.

There is a theory that Elizabeth Andrews was born in Dorchester, Suffolk County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, in 1707 to John Andrews and Elizabeth Story. Although this is possible, it is more probable that she was born in or near Ipswich, in Essex County.

Elizabeth married Abijah Wheeler in Ipswich on 8 Nov 1728.[1][2] They had eleven children, at least three of whom died in childhood:

  1. Elisabeth Wheeler (bp. 16 Nov 1729, Chebacco Parish Church)[3]
  2. Abijah Wheeler (bp. 25 Jul 1731, Chebacco Parish Church;[4] d. before 13 May 1733)
  3. Abijah Wheeler (bp. 13 May 1733, Chebacco Parish Church;[5] d. before 2 Nov 1740)
  4. Moses Wheeler (bp. 5 Oct 1735, Chebacco Parish Church;[6] d. before 7 Nov 1736)
  5. Moses Wheeler (twin, bp. 7 Nov 1736, Chebacco Parish Church)[7] d. before 15 Nov 1768)[8]
  6. Stephen Wheeler (twin, bp. 7 Nov 1736, Chebacco Parish Church;[9] d. before 15 Nov 1768)[10]
  7. Lucy Wheeler (bp. 13 Aug 1738, Chebacco Parish Church;[11] m. Samuel Procter, 25 Dec 1754)[12] Note: This may be Wheeler-24013 - msg sent to PM 10 Jun 2022)
  8. Abijah Wheeler (bp. 2 Nov 1740, Chebacco Parish Church;[13] d. before 15 Nov 1768)[14]
  9. Samuel Wheeler (bp. 15 Nov 1741, Chebacco Parish Church;[15] d. before 15 Nov 1768)[16]
  10. Hannah Wheeler (bp. 21 Oct 1744, Chebacco Parish Church)[17] d. before 15 Nov 1768)[18]
  11. Susannah Wheeler (bp. 12 Jul 1747, Fourth Church)[19]

Judging from where they had their children baptized, between 1744 and 1747 Elizabeth and Abijah left the Chebacco Parish Church and joined the second church to be established in Chebacco Parish, called Fourth Church.

Abijah Wheeler died in Ipswich on 1 Mar 1782. According to the Chebacco Parish Church records, he was about 80 years old.[20]

In his Last Will and Testament, dated 15 Nov 1768, Abijah left his estate, both real and personal, to his wife, Elizabeth, for the term of her life, and named only his three married daughters (Elizabeth Haskell, Lucy Procter and Susannah Goss) as surviving heirs from among his children. It can therefore be assumed that all of his sons, as well as his daughter Hannah, had died before that date, leaving no heirs of their own. He named his son-in-law, Samuel Proctor (Lucy's husband) as his sole executor and stipulated that any of Lucy's surviving male heirs could redeem his real estate, subject to certain provisions.[21]

Elizabeth (Andrews) Wheeler, a widow, died seven months after Abijah, on 9 Nov 1782, in Ipswich, of consumption (probably tuberculosis). According to the Chebacco Parish Church records, she was about 76 years old.[22][23]

The inventory for her husband's estate, valuing it at £351.16.0, was presented to the probate court after Elizabeth's death, on 1 Sep 1783.[24]
