Edgar Woodbury Andrews was born in 14 December 1868 in Gloucester, Essex county, Massachusetts. His parents were Joseph H Andrews (a fish dealer) and Martha Jane (Woodbury) Andrews; both born in Gloucester as well.[1][2]
According to the census, in 1870 Edgar Andrews, then 1 year of age, lived with his parents in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts. His parents are Joseph H, a fish dealer, and Martha Andrews (aged 31 and 30 respectively).[3]
In 1880 Edgar lived at the head of Folly Cove in Lanesville village, Gloucester, Essex county, Massachusetts with his maternal grandfather, John J. Woodbury (age 71), his father Joseph H. Andrews (age 41), and his mother Martha J. Andrews.[4]
Beginning in 1898 Edgar Woodbury Andrews was first a clerk and subsequently in charge of the store of the Rockport Granite Company and lived in the house with his parents at the head of Folly Cove.[5] The Rockport Granite Company is described as[6]:
"The quarries are now owned by the Rockport Granite Company, who have shown great enterprise and engineering skill in the prosecution of the work. Roads have been made, bridges built, breakwaters and wharves constructed, houses and stores erected, and employment furnished for from one hundred to over three hundred men, for whose convenience and accommodation neat cottages and well stocked store have been provided by the company."
In 1900 we find Edgar W Andrews age 31 living with Joseph H Andrews (Age: 61 & Birth Date: Jun 1838) in Gloucester Ward 7, Essex, Massachusetts. His father had married Martha J (nee Woodbury) Andrews in 1867. Both of his parents were born in Massachusetts.[7]
On June 15th, 1907 Edgar W Andrews (38) married Edith V Smith (33) in Rockport, Massachusetts. Both were first marriages. His parents are Joseph W Andrews and Martha J Woodbury. Her parents are Charles C Smith and Mary A Griffin.[8][9]
Sometime between June 1907 and February 1910 Edgar and Edith Andrews relocated to New Haven, Connecticut. Since Edgar was 38 in 1907 and is reported to have worked for the Seamless Rubber Company in New Haven for 36 years, it is likely he relocated to take a job as the cashier for this company, where he remained until 74 years of age.[10]
On 27 February 1910 their son Raymond was born in New Haven, Connecticut.[11] The family lives in Ward 9, New Haven, Connecticut later that year.[12]
Edna Griffin Andrews was born 10 Sep 1911 in New Haven, Connecticut to Edgar W Andrews and Edith Smith Andrews. The Obituary for Mrs Edna A Isherwood indicates she married twice (1st to Millen H Ketchum & 2nd to Robert A Isherwood) and died aged 95 on 4 May 2006 in Vermont, United States.[13][14]
Janet Andrews was born 30 Jun 1913 in New Haven, Connecticut to Edgar W Andrews and Edith Smith Andrews.[15][16] Janet Andrews was born to Edgar W Andrews and Edith Smith Andrews.[17] An obiturary in the Portland Press Herald for her husband, Lucien W Dean indicates he died 29 Apr 1996 in Maine, United States.[18] The Portland Press Herald records Janet A Dean's obituary. She was born about 1914 at New Haven, Connecticut and died 30 May 2000 at Rockport, Knox County, Maine.[19]
Mary Lois Andrews was born 4 Mar 1915 in Hamden, Connecticut to Edgar W Andrews and Edith Smith Andrews. She died (age 94) 11 May 2009 at Nashua, New Hampshire, United States.[20]
In 1920 Edger W Andrews (Age: 51) lists his birthplace as Massachusetts and his home in 1920 as Whitney Avenue, Hamden, New Haven, Connecticut. His spouses name was Edith C Andrews and his occupation was Cashier for a Rubber Company. His home was rented. Household members included his wife Edith C Andrews 46; son Raymond Andrews, age 9; daughter Edna Andrews age 8; daughter Janet Andrews age 6 and daughter Lois Andrews age 4. His mother Martha Andrews age 79 also lived with them.[21]
In 1958, Edgar reached a major milestone. A Hamden paper reports[22]:
"Edgar Andrews Elected Deacon for 34th Term
"One of the longest periods of service as a local church officer ever recorded in Hamden was continued in effect last week when Mt. Carmel Congregational Church re-elected Edgar Andrews of 2795 Whitney Avenue, to its board of deacons, Andrews has been a deacon of the church for 33 years.
"The Rev. Joseph Peters, pastor of the church, reports Andrews is the senior church officer both in age and in length of service. Andrews, who worked for the Seamless Rubber Company for 36 years, marked his 80th birthday last December 14. He moved to Hamden in 1915 and to the Mt. Carmel district seven years later. "
Edgar Woodbury Andrews died 12 Dec 1961 (at the age of 92 years) in Hamden, New Haven County, Connecticut and is buried at the Central Burying Grounds in Hamden.[23] [24][25]
