Maud was the first child of Alfred and Amanda. She died aged only eight. As their other children grew up, Maud was rarely talked about, so little is known about her. Her mother Amanda must have felt the loss deeply. Until her death, she kept in her room a satin box containing a small maroon-coloured frock of Maud's.[3]
