Biography

"The great-grand father [Elihu] of our subject [Cyrus Rodney Andrus] was a man of property, being owner of the entire marble quarry at Green Mountain, Vermont." [1]

Elihu was born on January 10, 1749-50 in Waterbury New Haven County, Connecticut to Abraham Andruss, [son of John Andruss], and Mabel Thomas.[2]

Elihu Andrus was born on 10 January 1749 in Waterbury Township, New Haven County, Connecticut to Abraham and Mable Andruss.[3]

Elihu Andrus, Andruss, Addruss, s. [Abraham & Mable] b. Jan. 10, 1749/1750 Waterbury, Connecticut [4]

Elihu married Sarah Brown on 15 Dec 1775 in Waterbury New Haven County, Connecticut.[5]

Elihu is found in 1780 on a Vermont Census record in Rutland County, Vermont.[6]

In 1790, Elihu "Andrup" appeared on the first United States Census in Sandgate, Bennington, Vermont.[7]

"In the Land Records of Tinmouth, Rutland County, Vermont ( Vol.2 p 347) is a deed in which “Jabez Been of Sandgate, Bennington Co." sells to "Elihu Andrus of Arlington, Bennington Co." for L800 lawful money, 200 acres and a hundred and thirty-one rods of land which was located in Tinmouth , Rutland County. The deed was recorded 18 Jan. 1797, and had been witnessed by John Halkins (?) and Polle Merril. This land may have been the land which (says his grandson) contained a marble quarry that was sold when the family moved to New York in 1816. Smith and Rand's History of Rutland County, Vermont , mentions that Elihu Andrus did have a marble quarry on his land. [8]That Elihu “Andrup” [Andruss] was of Bennington Co. when he purchased this land, and that there was a Daniel Brown listed adjacent to him on the 1790 census makes it fairly certain this was “our” Elihu."[9]

Elihu Andrus is enumerated on the 1800 Federal Census in Tinmouth, Rutland, Vermont. His family is as follows:

1 Male -10 thru 15
2 Males - 16 thru 25
1 Males - 45 and over
1 Female - Under 10
1 Female - 10 thru 15
1 Female - 16 thru 25
1 Female - 45 and over
Number of Household Members Under 16: 3
Number of Household Members Over 25: 2
Number of Household Members: 8 [10]

In 1810, Elihu continued to live in Tinmouth, Rutland, Vermont. His family was listed as;

1 Male - 45 and over
1 Females - 16 thru 25
2 Females - 45 and over
Number of Household Members Over 25: 3
Number of Household Members: 4[11]

Eliihu passed away before 12 December 1816 in New York. This is the date his will was probated. Elihu most likely died in Catherine, Tioga County, New York, as this is where his will was filed.

Elihu's will was probated on 12 December 1816 in Tioga County, New York.[12]

The inventory of Elihu's estate was filed on 10 June 1817, with a final settlement of his estate on 25 July 1820.[13]

In the name of God amen. I Elihu Andrews of the Town of Catharine in the County of Tioga State of New York, Farmer being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God. Calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say. Principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul at the hand of Almighty God who gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent christian burial at the direction of my executors, nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God. First I will that Sarah my dearly beloved wife shall have her support as long as she shall live out of my estate. Also I will that my four sons, Abijah, Cyrus, Elihu, Ruel, be made equal out of my property and I also will that my three daughters, Sarah, Orpha, Cloe have each one half as much as one son, and I also will that my daughter Asenath have Twelve dollars and fifty cents.
