Biography

William Andrews, the son of William and Elizabeth Andrews, was born on April 12, 1723 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts.[1] [2]

He married Ruth Riggs in 1744[3] several of their children are listed in this record.

  • 1. Ruth Andrews Norwood born 10 Aug 1745 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts; died in Bass Harbor, Mount Desert, Hancock County, Maine. She married on 12 Dec 1765 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts Joshua NORWOOD (see 477), christened 6 Nov 1743 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts, died 1785 in Bass Harbor, Mount Desert, Hancock County, Maine, son of Joshua NORWOOD and Sarah GOODRICH.
  • ii. John Andrews, born 20 Jun 1748 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts. Notes: John was a fisherman in Gloucester in 1771. He was a private and later a corporal in the Revolutionary War in the company of Major Burnham, May 1790, in service of the Scioto Company to make settlement on the Ohio River. There is some discussion as to if he was married and if his wife was Susanna Choate. See Reference.
  • iii. William ANDREWS, born 18 Sep 1750 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts. Notes: William was a private and late a sergeant during the Revolutionary War. He was reported killed.
  • iv. Elizabeth ANDREWS, born 23 Oct 1752 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts. She married on 26 Jan 1769 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts Isaac NORWOOD , born 1746 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts; died about 1846 in Georgetown, Sagadahoc County, Maine, son of Joshua NORWOOD and Sarah GOODRICH.
  • v. Sarah Andrews Burnham, born 29 Apr 1755 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts. She married on 11 Jun 1774 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts John BURNHAM, christened 13 Aug 1758 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts, son of Jeremiah BURNHAM and Abigail ANDREWS.
  • vi. Solomon ANDREWS, christened 4 Sep 1757 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts. Notes: Since there was no guardianship for Solomon at his father's death, he probably died young.
  • vii. Martha Andrews, christened 28 Oct 1758 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts. She married James BARTON.

William Andrews fought in the Siege of Louisbourg, which was the definitive end to the constant English-French conflict in the New World. New France was all but relegated to Quebec, as Acadians were dispersed. The end to French colonialism in the New World also permitted peaceful development of Maine as it all but ended the Indian massacres of English colonists that had been incited by the French. William died from wounds sustained in battle on the way home. He died intestate, and his brother Jonathan Andrews was appointed guardian of his minor children; William, Sarah, Martha and Elizabeth, on 18 April 1763.

Bill, either this William did not marry Ruth Riggs, or his dates need to be changed. He could be the same as Andrews-10282. What do you think?
