William was born February 25th, 1855 in New York.[1] From birth to some time between 1870 and 1879 William lived in his home state, before moving to Des Moines County, Iowa.[2] Soon after William made it to Iowa, he married Martha Cooley on February 25th, 1879.[3][4] William passed on November 4th 1937 in Union Township, Des Moines County, Iowa.[1]
William and Martha had at least 7 children all of whom seem to have built their life around Des Moines County, Iowa
William shows up in the 1880 United States Census, in Pleasant Grove, Des Moines, Iowa with his wife Martha and his son Charles. [16] Then in the Iowa State Census 1885. [17] After that we jump to the United States Census 1900, where William and Martha are raising 5 of their children. [18]. Next up is the Iowa State Census 1905. Unfortunately William's wife Martha passed between 1900 and 1905 so William is shown as widowed. Also this census seems to have only held the head of household, it is unknown who was all living with William. [19]. Next we have 1910 where Carl, Mary and Harry are still living at home. [20]. After that we have the Iowa State Census 1915 where William is 62. Interestingly enough, this census we have his income from working as a farm hand. Over the course of 1914 he earned $360.[21] In the 1910s the average income over all industries was $438 per year. [22]
Research Notes
Possible LNAB: Andariese [3] All early records, pre 1900, follow this suspicion. Andries seems to be in place after 1900
Both parents born in New York aswell, at least to William's knowledge, as all records citing a birthplace for parents are in New York.
Christine Roberts_7 on FamilySeach claims William Hersey Andariese was a runaway in 1867 FamilySearch page
"William Hersey Andariese runs away from home
William Hersey Andariese's mother, Rebecca, in the Surrogate's Court in 1875 described how her son ran away on 26 August 1867 - she said he was about 10 years old, but according to his birth in 1855, he would have been about 13 years old. There are a couple of inconsistencies like that in her testimony. They never found him, despite what she said were her diligent efforts. She wanted him to be declared dead for purposes of distributing her husband's estate.
William H. Andariese of Iowa who married Martha Cooley also has the middle name Hersey. I think this is the same boy who ran away from home in 1867.
Several trees on Ancestry have his parents as James Andariese and Susan Gillings of Niagra County, NY. But this makes no sense as their son William was 21, single, and still living with his parents in the 1880 census. William Hersey Andariese of Iowa was already married and starting a family in Iowa at the time. These are two different William Andariese individuals.
The middle name Hersey is too unusual to be a coincidence."
