Biography

About 1774, probably in North Carolina, Mary Godwin married immigrant, William Angel II (1752-1852). Thought to have immigrated from Shropshire, England to America (North Carolina Colony ?) in the early 1770's as a young adult, William Angel was the son of William Angel I (1724-1800) and Mary Partridge (1728-1804). Both were born in England where they lived and died. Their place of death and burial location are unknown.

The censuses for 1830 and 1840 show Mary as living with her son, Archibald "Arch" Angel (abt 1775-1847) and his family on their Angel Valley farm in Campbell Co., Tennessee. She was probably living with them in 1820 as well, and possibly in 1810. Apparently, she and William Angel II separated/divorced in the early 1800's. It is uncertain, but William may have then married a younger woman and have had 2-3 children with her.

Mary Angel died in her 90's (between 1841-50) and she is buried in the Angel Family Cemetery (aka Angel-Wright Cemetery) in Angel Valley near the little community of present day Ketchen. Her son, Arch Angel (72), died in 1847 and was also buried there. James Trammell (1774-1826), brother of Arch's first wife, Nancy Ann Trammell (abt 1782-1829), has the oldest readable marker in this family cemetery that has 160+ unidentifiable grave sites.

The 1850 census shows William Angel II's age as being about 100 ! He died on 9 January 1852 in Charlotte Co., Virginia where he was living with four adults each with the last name of Angel, two of them unmarried daughters (Ellen Angel & Mary Angel) from his marriage to 2. Mary. The relationship of the other two adults (Mildred Angel & Monroe Angel) are uncertain. William's burial site is unknown.
