On 5 Sept 1918, at Granville, OH, Vernon enlisted in the US Army ("National Army") for service during WW I, (service number: 38602530) he was in training at Camp Sherman, located on W. High Street (in 'Hilltop' area) Columbus, OH at time of the Armistice. His unit was 11th Company, 3d Training Battalion, 158th Depot Brigade in the School for Bakers and Cooks. He was Honorably Discharged on 12 Dec1918 (31 days after the Armistice) and returned to the home farm. (One of his nephews (Robert C. ANG) and one great-nephew (John R. ANG) apparently inherited something of Vernon's Quartermaster experience, leading to their own, later Army service with QM Corps duty.
In mid 1930s Vernon and Irma purchased (Licking Co. Recorder shows purchase in May 1936, 91.84ac, $6,818. from Albert Whitehead; deed bk 316, page 52) their farm on the present Hazelton Etna Road (S.R. 310) less than a mile south of Pataskala (Ohio) Village; now within City of Pataskala, where they maintained a few cows, farmed the land, and Vernon assisted with transporting milk from the family farm to Columbus in his truck. He also conducted business as a supplier & hauler of agricultural lime and fertilizers in the local area.
Also in early '30s, Vernon faithfully attended the annual Christmas Eve dinners (along with 11 other offspring) at Charles and Dora's home at Town and High Street in Pataskala, enjoying the oysters, and meats with all the trimmings; following the meal he seemed to disappear as we moved into the 'front room' ready for Santa's arrival to distribute gifts for the five grandchildren in attendance. A note for Uncle Vernon: Some of us smaller folks made a connection between the signs of 'cow stable' on the black rubber boots (common to dairy barns) and that "Ho, Ho, Ho, with the missing uncle! But it was always a good experience. (RCA)
