Biography

This is what I believe due to recent DNA studies and from what has been turned up. A William Anglin arrives about 1688-9. An Eleanor arrived in 1688, they may have arrived together or he followed shortly afterwards. We don't have an exact time frame other than he stated that he he been in America for 32 years. This deposition was in 1721 or about the same time he was in debtors prison. The first record of this William was in Anne Arundle Co MD in 1696. In the 1721 deposition he stated that he was 62 which means he was born about 1658-9. He had three sons and at least one daughter. The dates are not exact but taken from Church records, William born 1695, John 1697 and Cornelius in 1700. Mary was born about 1709. William Sr was married to a Sarah as per Church records. When Mary was christened it listed William and Sarah as parents. July 22 1725 William married Elizabeth Taylor (widow) in St Anne's Parish Ann Arundle Co. On the tax list in 1723 his son was in Somerset Co as William Jr. John married Mary Uneth in All Hallows Parish in Anne Arundle Co 5-21-1734. Keep this date in mind as we continue. Cornelius married Barbara. They christened their son Cornelius Jr 6-4-1729 in St Paul's Parish Baltimore. Cornelius Sr died before 1738 as Barbara was listed as a widow. Mary married Robert Gardener 1-5-1728 in St Paul's Parish. It is speculated that John and Cornelius are William's sons because there was only ONE Anglin family in Maryland. There were a few Anglin's in Maryland after 1750 and even up to 1810, plus a William who was in the war of 1812 and a Charles Aggeling in 1840. A sixty acre section of Anglin's Discovery in Anne Arundle County, Maryland was sold in 1724. William Sr would have been 65-66 that year. In 1705 a William Anglin was transported to King and Queen Co Virginia, from Maryland, this is likely William Sr. It could be false information since the person who transported him was given a 50 acre head-right and may have just wrote down that he transported him. There were 11 people named on the list. In 1726 a William Angely/Anglea patented 540 acres in Hanover Co. In 1734 a William Anglin received a land grant for 162 acres in Hanover Co. William Jr had been listed as the possible brother of Adrian but we recently found that Adrian was an indentured servant and arrived in 1720. In 1757 a William Anglin is in Louisa Co Va on Locust Creek. A William Anglin was still there in 1767. Also in 1767 there was another William Anglin living on the South Anna River in Louisa Co. In 1751 a William Anglin purchased land in Albemarle Co Va. In 1758 a William purchased 100 acres on Georges Creek in Albemarle Co Va. In 1783 and 1797 a William Anglin still owed land in this area. In 1763 a William Anglin was on a land entry in Pittsylvania Va, John Anglin 1734-1796 lived near or on that land, just across the border from Caswell NC. Ok now to figure all of this out: Your Catherine was the sister to Cornelius b 1755, John b 1757, Nancy M maybe the oldest, Mary , who married James Barton/Burton, William b 1762-3, Aaron b 1764 (said NC), Catherine ca 1775 Married William Browning and Sarah/Sally ca 1780 who married Richard Smith 1803. A Cornelius died in the rev war 1777 and a second Cornelius 1755 died about 1792 Orange Co NC. Nancy married William McIntosh, William married Kerenhappuch Rice of Wright, Aaron married Elizabeth (Betsy) Siddle (my line), On John's rev war pension he said he was born in Louisa VA. That puts him in Louisa in 1757. Many from the South Anna River area moved to Caswell NC and I assume William III lived near there. Adrian Anglin had a son William born March 31 1733, he is NOT our William, dna proves this. One William died in Caswell NC 1803 the other in WV. Notice the William living on Locust Creek in 1767? That might be William Jr or our William III just before moving to Caswell. The land in 1751 in Albemarle, Adrian's son is too young in 1751 unless he bought land when he was 17, nearly 18. If he did then who is in Louisa in 1767? Adrian moved to Albemarle. There was a William Anglin who came over on a felon ship in 1740. Our William was born maybe 10 years before that and his likely father was in what became Louisa when Hanover split. This "felon" could be the one buying land in Albemarle and still there in 1783 and 1797 but no ancestors have ever showed up from his line. Adrian's William was in Anglinford (Philippi) running a ferry in that time frame, our William was in Caswell. The William on George's Creek could be a grandson of Adrian. Adrian's son William doesn't have a son William listed as his, nor does his brother John. There was a Phillip Anglin b about 1720 who was running around VA and he is likely the one from Jamaica, so little is known about him but there are quite a few too many Anglin's born about 1775 to fit the known parents. So, since William Jr was around in 1734 and bought land in Hanover which became Louisa I am convinced that he is the father to our William. Phillip is too young, Adrian's DNA doesn't match, so that leaves Willliam Jr as the father of William III. Adrian had a son Phillip b 1742 so the Phillip 1720 is a mystery. I think he is the son of the Phillip in Jamaica who arrived there around 1730-40. I have gone by the "take away what you know and what is left is the truth" method to put our William as the son of William Jr. Our William married an Ann, in a separate family tree a researcher has Ann Cunningham marrying a William Anglin about the same time frame, but they are incorrect as Ann Cunningham was a witness on the will of William Anglin so a gross error was made. I tried to email this person but the address came back dead. Notice that William Sr had sons, William, John and Cornelius and our William used the same three names. We are the only Anglin family in America to use the name Cornelius. Also the only one to use Aaron. Adrian's line was the only one to use Adrian and Phillip and Joseph, The James line in Ga only used David, Thomas and Henry for the first 100 years. So with a William Anglin on Locust Creek in 1767 another on South Anna river and Adrian's William in Pittsylvania in 1763. Adrian had lived in Hanover Co but bought land in 1746 in Albemarle. He was in Albemarle in Sept 1746 on a road crew. So it is likely that his son William, 13, was there with him and not back in Louisa/Hanover. We know Adrian's son John was in Pittsylvania and lived along the Dan River and the land purchase was along the Dan River, but in 1773 Adrian and his son William were taxed in Buckingham Co. Maybe someday we will find something to tie William Jr to our William other than location...and the use of the name Cornelius as a possible son and brother to William 1730-1803.

Bob

(I don't know exactly who Bob is, except he is a descendent of Aaron Anglin and Elizabeth Siddle and knows his William Anglins.)

The DNA studies, to my knowledge, have not connected the Anglins in Group 2 of the Anglin DNA Project to anyone earlier that the William Anglin who died in Caswell County, North Carolina, in 1803. --Karen Parker

I am the one who wrote the Bio listed. William Sr bought "Anglin's Discovery" in 1709 and today I know where it was but not the exact boundaries. I have a few updates. Nancy is M not B. Mary is the second daughter. Catherine and Sarah were born later than what I wrote. The sale of 60 acres may have been to get William out of debtors prison. William III was on the South Anna River. Many from the Cub Creek area moved to Orange/Caswell NC. Because of the tax record Aaron was born in Louisa Va 1764 yet grew up in NC. Adrian arrived 1717. There were two Cornelius Anglin's who served from Caswell NC. The one who received pay in 1782 and who's inventory was handled by his father in 1792 in Orange NC. One was a brother or cousin to William III. Aaron was 1764 not 65. Phillip 1720 from Jamaica.
