Biography

Clarence Anglin was born on 11 May 1931 in Donalsonville, Seminole County, Georgia, USA and his parents were Rachel Van Dora (Miller) and (George) Robert Anglin, Sr. (1896-1989) who were seasonal farm workers. In the early 1940s, the family moved to Ruskin, Florida, USA (20 miles south of Tampa), where the truck farms and tomato fields provided a more reliable source of income. Each June they migrated north as far as Michigan to pick cherries.

Clarence and his brother John worked as farmers and laborers. In the early 1950s, they began a life of robbery. Their targets were usually closed, to ensure that no one got injured. They claimed that they used a weapon only once (a toy gun), during a bank heist. [1]

After robbing the Bank of Columbia branch in Columbia, Alabama, USA they were arrested in 1958. Both received 15-to-20-year sentences, which they served at Florida State Prison, Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary, and then Atlanta Penitentiary. After repeated failed attempts to escape from the Atlanta facility, the brothers were transferred to Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, a maximum-security facility located on an island in San Francisco Bay, off the coast of California, USA ...

John arrived on 24 Oct 1960, as inmate AZ1476; and
Clarence arrived on 10 Jan 1961, as inmate AZ1485.

On the night of 11 June 1962 prison inmates Frank Morris and the brothers, John and Clarence Anglin escaped from their cells and left the island in a makeshift raft. In a joint effort, multiple military and law-enforcement agencies conducted an extensive air, sea, and land search over the next 10 days. Though their bodies were never found, officials publicly stated that they presumed the men had drowned, but It remains uncertain what happened to them after entering San Francisco Bay.

The surviving members of the Anglin family have long believed the 2 Anglin brothers men survived.

A 2018 documentary was made about them, "Alcatraz Escape: The Lost Evidence" which showed that an FBI forensic artist examined a supposed 1975 photograph of the 2 brothers and determined that it "was highly" likely that it was them.
