A SAD DROWNING FATALITY . FOUR BRAVE MEN. By Wire. — From Our Correspondent WARRNAMBOOL, Sunday. A sad case of drowning, whereby a young girl named Alice Angus lost her life, occurred at Shelly Beach about 11 o'clock this morning. The locality in question is a rocky plateau at the back of a precipice, forming a portion of the coast line at South Warrnambool. and is a favorite resort for visitors. The waves break on the rocks with terrific force when there is a heavy sea. Miss Angus and a friend named Miss Green were staying at the house of Mr. Harrison at South Warrnambool. The girls expressed their desire to indulge in a sea bath at Shelly Beach, and visited the place this morning, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs Harrison, with that object in view. Notwithstanding the turbulent condition of the water, the girls went in for their bath. They had not been in long before a huge breaker was observed coming in, and Mrs. Harrison warned the girls, who were at this time standing within a yard of each other in the water, of their danger. Miss Green immediately made for a place of safety ; but Miss Angus replied, "I'm not afraid," and caught hold of a rock,, intending to cling to it while the wave dashed over her. She bad scarcely uttered tho words, when the wave broke over her. The force of the huge volume of water caused her to lose hold of the rock, and she was carried out to sea. Mrs. Harrison and Miss Green were almost paralysed at the sight of their friend being carried away ; but the former succeeded in rushing up the bank to give the alarm to her husband, who was some distance away. A crowd of people soon gathered at the scene of the accident. The sea was so rough that it would have been impossible for a swimmer to live in it, and no attempt could be made to recover the body, which was soon away a mile out to sea. However, four young fellows, S. Ferrier, G. Mitchell. T. Hayes and Charles J. Leberg, secured a whale boat, and in imminent risk of their lives, ventured out, but were unable to get near the spot where the body was last seen. The boat was several times nearly capsized, and they were at last compelled to give up the attempt in despair. About half-past 5 o'clock this evening, the body was washed into a little bay near tho breakwater viaduct, where it was recovered. The body was bruised in several places, but otherwise was not seriously injured. The unfortunate girl was 17 years of age. Her parents occupy a farm at Woolsthorpe, and great sympathy is expressed for them in their sad bereavement. An inquiry will be held, to-morrow.
