Joseph Angus was born in about 1880 in Halton, Cheshire. He was the eldest child of George Angus and Elizabeth Angus.
By April 3rd 1881, the family were living in Green Lane, Ditton. Joseph's father was working as an alkali works labourer - a dangerous job in terrible working conditions.
A brother William was born two years after Joseph; a sister Agnes two years later; and a sister Georgina six years after that, in about 1888-9.
Joseph's father died in 1889. He was only 36.
By April 5th 1891, Joseph's mother and her four children were still living in Widnes. She wasn't trying to work, but was "living off her means". Perhaps her husband had had life insurance.
By March 31st 1901, the family was still living in Widnes. Joseph's mother had married again, to a widower named William Smith. Joseph was working as a chemical labourer, like his father had.
Joseph married Emily Davenport in 1907 in Prescot district, in a registrar-attended ceremony.
By April 2nd 1911, Joseph and Emily were living in Widnes district, and Joseph was working as a soap labourer - presumably making soap, possibly the same chemical works job he had had ten years previously.
Emily died in 1941 in Birkenhead district, aged 58.
