Biography

Benjamin was born in 1823. He is the son of Benjamin Angwin and Elizabeth Chirgwin. Benjamin was baptised on 1 December 1823, emigrated to Victoria about 1854, and married Jane Kent in 1856 in Ballarat, Victoria. Of Soldier’s Hill 1863 -1872. They had ten children born at Ballarat. Jane buried 24 Aug 1872 age 40. “Funeral Notice. — The Friends of Mr Benjamin Angwin are respectfully invited to follow the remains of his late wife to the place of interment, the Ballarat Old Cemetery. The funeral procession to move from his residence, No. 16 Brougham Street, on Saturday, the 24th instant, at Three o'clock p.m.” [The Ballarat Courier, 23 August 1872]

He died on 26 September 1892 at Brougham Street Ballarat, aged 69. [The Ballarat Star, 4 Oct 1892] late of St Just, Cornwall. [The Age, 27 Sept 1892] He was a tea dealer. [d.cert] Mr Benjamin Angwin, a resident of Ballarat for nearly 38 years, died early yesterday (Monday) morning at his residence, Brougham street, Soldiers Hill, The deceased had been laid aside from active work for more than four months past, and suffered severely during that period. Mr Angwin was of an independent spirit, and left his home early in life for America. After reaching there he was employed as overseer on some of the large tunnels on the Baltimore and Ohio railways. Subsequently he started the journey from New York to California, reaching there at the time of the gold rush, travelling a distance of about 2000 miles on foot. He arrived in Australia just at the conclusion of the Eureka Stockade struggle, and was appointed “boss” in the good old-Kohinoor Gold Mining Company, in which position had gained the high esteem of both managers and men. On leaving there he was the recipient of valuable gifts from the workmen of his shift. The deceased, who was an adherent of the Neil street Wesleyan Church, was highly respected by a very large circle of acquaintances. He leaves a grown up family of three sons and two daughters.
